Horror rollover in Southern Desert

Two people have narrowly escaped with their lives following a shocking single vehicle rollover in the southern desert.

The incident occurred about 20km north of the Ti Tree community at 10:15am on Thursday.

The van carrying the driver and single passenger was travelling along the Stuart Highway when the vehicle allegedly hit a culvert and flipped onto its roof.

Both the man and female walked away from the horror crash with emergency services only needing to address shock and minor injuries.

Remote Sergeant Catherine Martin thanked all members of the public that stopped and offered assistance to rescue pair.

“Initial investigations indicate fatigue may have been involved in this crash,” she said.

“Fatigue is one of the fatal five, if you are tired please pull over and rest. These passengers were incredibly lucky.”

Data from Road Safety NT revealed 6.7% of the 346 driving fatalities from 2012 to 2021 were fatigue related.
