Waratah goalkicker Jenna ‘Aggie’ Singh will train with Essendon’s VFL team early next year

A young Waratah goalkicker is set to train with a Melbourne-based club early next year after Covid ruined her first foray down south.

Waratah gun goalkicker Jenna “Aggie” Singh will have her second shot at a VFLW career early next year.

Singh, 20, who has already slotted 15 majors from three electrifying Women’s Premier League matches so far this season, trained with Essendon’s reserves team before Covid wrecked her plans in early 2020.

With Waratah in the 2019-20 grand final against Southern Districts, Singh was flying from one end of the country to the other to fulfil both dreams.

“Covid hit and I couldn’t go back,” Singh told the NT News.

“It stuffed everything up.”

However, through a connection with former Tiwi Bombers president Dean Rioli, Singh will return to Tullamarine to get second crack at playing at a higher level, with an AFLW career still a dream.

“It would be a really big thing for me and my family, it would be so emotional if I was drafted,” Singh said, who was also one of the Territory’s best in a representative game against Woodville-West Torrens in January.

“I would love to do that.

“I’m looking forward to going back down.”

Born in Darwin and raised in the Palmerston Indigenous Village, Singh grew up kicking bottles if footies were scarce, and would play alongside friend and future Gwynne medallist, Molly Althouse.

However, with some guidance from her “cousin brother”, former number one draft pick Richard Tambling, Singh got serious about her footy when she attended Marrara Christian College.

After winning a few junior premierships with the Tiwi Bombers, she crossed to Waratah for the 2017-18 season.

She eventually achieved a dream by playing her first Women’s Premier League at Gardens Oval the following season.

After being told by former Tahs coach Colleen Gwynne there were scouts in town to watch her play, she got a call from Essendon with an invitation too good to ignore.

Singh has not dwelled on a lost opportunity, however, tackling her footy with gusto, either in Darwin or down in Katherine.

Over the past two Big Rivers Football League seasons, she has made the 300km car trip to play for the Arnhem Crows, kicking 12 goals from 18 games while ensuring Singh was cherry ripe for the 2022-23 opener.

“Round 1, I was feeling really good to be back on the field, I was really pumped,” Singh said, slotting eight goals against St Mary’s at Gardens.

“I didn’t even know I kicked eight goals.

“My aunty told me ... I didn’t really care about the goals.

“But it’s good to put myself out there and show people what I can do.”
