FEDERAL moved a game clear on top of the CAFL’s Premier League ladder with a hard fought 26-point win over Souths on Saturday.
Federal was slow out of the blocks against the pacy Roos, but fought back to lead at halftime before going on to win, 12.6 (78) to 6.16 (52).
Wingman-defender Dustin Oliver and big ruckman Dan Gorry were Federal’s best against a Souths side that had come to play.
Coach Dave Thomas said Oliver’s four quarter performance had kept his side in the game in the first quarter.

“We started pretty slowly, but they were pretty good and showed plenty of skill,’’’ Thomas said.
“Dusty Oliver was unbelievable and really important to us in that first quarter when he really stepped up and played some great footy.
“And Gorry is having a great season, he gives us a really good presence around the ground.
“We’ve made a pretty good start to the year and with a shorter season it’s important to keep winning and that’s what we intend to do.’’
Ismael Palmer and Josh Dixon were consistent forward targets for Federal with three majors each.
Souths did themselves no favours with some errant finishing in front of goals.
In the game at Albrecht Oval, Pioneer beat Wests 48 points, with Tennant Creek’s Green brothers, Andrew and Matt, playing pivotal roles.
In a look into the future of the Centralian game, 16-year-old Andrew found plenty of the football running off half back and through the middle.
Matt Green was Pioneer’s everywhere man, setting up several goals for the Eagles.
Up forward Shawn Foster booted five goals and Clayton Walker four to ensure they always stayed out of range of the young Wests side.
In another boost for the Eagles, Curtly and Jamie Hampton will pull on the green and gold jumper against Federal on Saturday.
