FEDERAL’S rise from also-rans last season to genuine premiership contender continues at Traeger Park tomorrow when they face the unpredictable Souths.
Three wins from as many outings have the Demons in a confident frame of mind coming into the 3pm game at CAFL headquarters.
But in-form midfielder Abe Ankers knows there is a lot of work to with the shortened season already at the halfway point.
“The mood’s pretty good and we’ve kept our heads down knowing we have to keep working hard,’’ Ankers told the NT News.
“This week is no different against last season’s grand finalists Souths, who have a lot of talent
in their side.
“We’re going in expecting a serious game of football knowing they’ll be throwing everything at us in search of a win.’’
Souths coach Darren Talbot has implemented a youth policy this season, giving his talented colts players a taste of senior football with experienced players like Daniel Stafford and Darren Abbott around them.
Kicking a winning score and controlling the Federal midfield are factors Talbot would have taken on board this week as the Roos look for their second win of the season.
Pioneer’s running game kept them in touch with reigning premier Rovers in the first half of last week’s clash and coach Danny Measures will want more of the same when they meet the young Wests side at Albrecht Oval.
Kane Sevallos on a wing and Jawoyn Cole-Manolis through the middle were impressive and Shawn Foster looks capable of a bag of goals if given any latitude from opposition defenders.
Wests are not far away from a win despite being jumped in the first quarter by a ferocious Federal and losing their third straight match.
Jasper Wheeler’s eight goals from limited opportunities make him a dangerous opponent and Mishai Wollogorang and Nick Whyte are good users of the ball.
