THE Territory’s best emerging netball talent has been selected to compete in the National Underage Championship in Hobart this July.
The under-17s and under-19s squads comprise Territory talent from both major centres of Darwin and Alice Springs.
Many selected were part of selections last year for the 2020 Championships cancelled due to COVID-19.
But Netball NT pathways manager Penny Shearer believes that setback of last year has the girls selected even more eager to represent the Territory and make an impact.

“The girls are excited particularly after last year where some missed out due to COVID,” Shearer said.
“There’s been some real competition for spots with plenty of talent despite a smaller pool so there was tough conversations to have when selecting.
“It’s a good problem to have and shows that the quality has certainly improved as a result of the academy pathways which are having an effect on the talent here.
“These teams have consistently been lifting in performance over the years and these squads will be looking to continue that growth where other states no longer look at us as easybeats.
“There’s plenty of creative flair and potential so we’re looking forward to seeing this great group of young women play some great netball.”
And there is no bigger show of what Territory netballers can achieve than the recent success of Gabby Coffey, who recently signed with the Melbourne Vixens.
Coffey is the first Territorian to make it to that level serving as a key inspiration to the Territory’s up and coming netballers.
“Nationals is a whole other level for these girls and a key part of their growth and development as players,” Shearer said.
“Coffey is our first entrance into that level of the game and is a perfect showing that there is a pathway in the sport here which these girls are at the beginning of.
“It just shows these girls what they can achieve, what they need to train like and how they need to play if they want to reach that level.”
