A TALENTED youth outfit shone for a soaring Tracy Village side in its 116-76 win over an Essington side unable to fire in Round 5 of the 2020 Men’s Darwin Basketball Championship.

A first-quarter lead set the tone with William Burton (29 points, seven three-pointers) and import Jerron Jamerson (29 points) excelling early.

The Cannons fought back in the second quarter to briefly take back the lead through contributions from captain Lachlan Shipway (20 points) and Raymond Jarrett (19 points).

However, that brief resurgence gave Jets the wake-up they needed to regather and surge back into the game.

A 42-point final quarter for Jets locked up the game with the side’s junior players taking centre stage.

Unguarded Daniel Gabriel-Yak (18 points, four three-pointers) then quickly piled on the points for the victors.

Jets captain Liam MacLachlan was proud of his side’s efforts both in maintaining their unbeaten run and being able to have fun.

“Always a great feeling to get the win and in that last quarter we really pushed it out and had some fun which makes it even better,” MacLachlan told the NT News.

“We gave the young guys a bit of a run in that last quarter and I think they really made the most of that opportunity.

“Our focus now will be to keep on pushing, keep up our fitness and work a little more on defence.

“Jerron has brought a lot of positive energy and his game is always spectacular, but it’s that positiveness that he’s brought to us which has helped lift the whole side even more.”

Shipway felt his side’s lack of communication let the team down, and that would be the biggest focus for the side going forward.

“We played poorly as a team and it’s one of those games that we will need to use as a hard reset,” Shipway said.

“We just didn’t work as a team while Jets played as if they were a brotherhood. Every pass would find the most open guy on their side while we didn’t talk.”
