ALICE Springs Guineas winner Shift The Risk will be looking for his second Territory Guineas win of the year in the feature race-eight $50,000 TAB Darwin Guineas (1300m) at Fannie Bay from 4.50pm today.

The three-year-old enjoyed a highly successful Pioneer Park campaign winning all three of his starts on the dirt track with returning jockey Raymond Vigar back in the saddle.

Now, Shift The Risk will line up on the Darwin track for the first time as part of a Tayarn Halter-trained quartet which also includes Comogli, Defence Attorney and Testino.

“I’m confident that he can go well up here but it’s a different field to what he faced in Alice and it will be a tough race,” Halter told the NT News.

“He does well wherever he lands early in the race whether that has him leading or sitting behind a leader and will be a chance.

But all four of them have been looking good in trackwork and I am confident that will go well through what will be a tough race.”

Champion trainer Gary Clarke will be the biggest contender to Halter with flying youngsters Autocratic and Escondido showing strong recent form on the Darwin track.

The race-four $30,000 Silks Darwin Handicap (1100m) will also draw plenty of interest despite the small field, with Halter’s premier sprinter Eastwood expected to be right in the running.

Robert Gulberti’s Rodger The Roman returning from a 39-week spell and Clarke’s champion sprinter The Captain will pose significant threats to Eastwood.

But Eastwood’s form includes four wins from eight attempts this campaign and will be looking to lift once again despite finishing fourth last start.

Hoop Vigar will also be aboard in the sprint.

“He went super last start in a tough race and has been looking great recently,” Halter said.

“He’s still yet to beat The Captain and has not faced Rodger The Roman but has done well of late and has the skill to give himself a chance in this tough but small field.”
