A CONTROLLED game under pressure saw St Mary’s race to a massive 21.13 (139) to 8.12 (60) win over the Tiwi Bombers at TIO Stadium.

Shaun Edwards wearing the zero number to represent the No More round was right in the scoring kicking the opener from 50 metres to see Saints in front in under a minute.

An early swirling wind saw Saints struggle in front of goal but as that eased they found their breakthrough with hard work from players such as Nate Paredes, Dylan Landt and Lucas Jellyman-Turner rewarded with scores.

A move to the midfield for Ross Tungatalum inspired Tiwi’s first goal with the star forward working in tandem with Nathan Scagliarini to claim his side’s first and give the Bombers some confidence.

But that confidence was soon dissuaded with Paredes kicking a soccer goal while Beau Tedcastle and Ryan Smith also found themselves in the scoring.

St Mary’s stayed composed under pressure throughout particularly when the game opened up in the third quarter where Tiwi quickly scored seven goals with Mason DeWit and Angus Byrne among the scorers.

However, Saints held their own with Lachlan Taylor showing that he could run with the speedsters of Tiwi.

Paredes was proud of his side’s ability to control the tempo from the outset and hold on even when the Bombers threatened to come back into the contest.

“It was a pretty good. We had a bad loss a couple weeks ago against Darwin and we wanted to make up for that,” Paredes told the Sunday Territorian.

“We just wanted to control the tempo of the game and come out and hit hard to put the pressure on early which I think we managed to do to get the game on our terms.

“You’re always going to have a time period that turns into a shootout against Tiwi and we know how easy they can score with their run so we knew we just had to maintain that.

“We closed out today but we have a tough few weeks as there’s no real easy week. We just have to hit the track hard again and come out hard again.”

Saints kicked on the final quarter leaving the Bombers behind once again with the Tiwi side unable to find another score.
