SOUTHERN Districts came out the better side in the heat of Bathurst Island to beat the Tiwi Bombers 17.16 (118) to 8.12 (60) and claim their first win of the 2020-21 NTFL season.
Tiwi were quick to assert themselves with Angus Bryne scoring a quick double, a goal haul that was soon replicated by Harley Puruntatameri to give their side an early lead at the first break.
However, it was all Districts come the second quarter with as the Bombers’ fitness began to fade.

Captain Dean Staunton was busy alongside Charlie McAdam and James Tsitas – making an appearance just a week after winning the SANFL grand final with the Woodville Eagles - to feed their forward line with plenty of opportunities.
And the forward line took full advantage with Andrew Boseley bagging five while Jay Dahlhaus and Luke Kiel notched a haul of four goals and three goals respectively through the game.
“It is a bit of a relief to get that first win. The boys have been working hard with the first three wins being pretty close,” Staunton told the Sunday Territorian.
“We felt we could have grabbed a couple of those but it’s just good to get one on the board now and hopefully we can keep building from here.
“Our fitness is about where we want it to be and we really want to focus on that four quarter performance. I also don’t think we had a bad player out there so it was an across the board effort from everyone.
“Now we just have to keep our focus. We will get back on the track without needing to change much, we know we’re doing the right thing so we just need to keep doing that.”

Bombers managed to find their way back into the scoring in the third period off the back of the hard working Jack Monigatti with captain Paddy Heenan notching one while Nicholas Ebinger notched a double.
But the scoring came to a standstill in the final quarter while Districts fitness came to the fore dominating the final few exchanges.
