The tall has been a massive asset to Lightning in recent times finishing the season with the highest field goal percentage on her side.

She was named one of the league’s top five best defenders despite being sidelined for eight weeks with an ankle injury.

Lightning women’s coach Jason Ivinson has been a part of the star’s development since under 12 level and is proud to see her get the chance to follow her dreams.

“We’re all super proud. She’s a good kid who has put a lot of work in and is now following her dreams to bigger and better things,” Ivinson told the NT News.

“This is something she’s set her sights on for a long time and college basketball will be a big step up for her. We will miss her big time particularly the impact she brings.

“She was the leading shot blocker in the league and without someone like her we will have to change the way we play.

“But though we will miss her we want her to chase her dreams. She’s going in right direction and maybe in years to come we will be lucky enough to see her back in the side.

“She has a good head on her shoulders and puts the work in so I think if she handles the rigours of training and her body stays healthy the sky is the limit and she could play in the WNBL.”

Newberry head coach Joanna Tincher expressed her excitement to welcome the Darwin star into the college system. “We are super excited to welcome April into the Newberry Program,” Tincher said.

“She is a highly skilled post player that has worked extremely hard over the past several months to expand her game.

She is someone who we think will blossom with our player development and whose best basketball is in front of her.
