EAGLES claimed the 2020 Darwin Basketball Championship after an intense final saw them win 94-82 over Tracy Village.

With Eagles on an 18-game streak and the young Jets coming off one of their games of the season to beat Essington 125-84 in the preliminary final, last night’s title decider was destined to be a thriller.

A turnover on the run for Eagles’ Pat Golong, leading to a slam dunk, summed the intensity his side brought to the opening exchanges, with Jets unable to secure the ball.

That was until a Thomas Malseed-forced turnover leading to a dunk from import and 2020 league MVP Jerron Jamerson brought Tracy Village back into the contest.

The Jets run kept things tight with Will Burton, Ned Stevens and Joel Stevens all adding to the scoring, alongside Jamerson.

But it was Eagles back in control soon enough, Chris Elder dominating with three-pointers aplenty.

Jamerson returned to the scoring for Jets, giving their fans plenty to cheer about, while the run of Malseed and Keenan Abbott continued to chip away at their deficit.

Eagles fans also had plenty to cheer about, with imports Joseph Jackson and Ambros Eugster putting in whole-game shifts.

And Matthew Hammer scored a three-pointer with his first shot during a cameo appearance.

Jets had all the momentum behind them in the final quarter, with the Stevens brothers and Burton narrowing Eagles’ once significant lead to a single-digit score.

But coolness under pressure from Elder at the free-throw and three-point line was enough to see Eagles home.
