SHANNON Motlop’s two year coaching stint at Wanderers is over after his application for a new three-year deal was turned down by the club hierarchy.

Motlop took Wanderers from second last to the preliminary final last season in what seemed to be the ideal preparation for a long stay at the helm.

But club president Jerome Cubillo said part of their plans for short and long term success meant they could only offer him a one year deal with an option.

“We wanted to offer him a further season with an option and some additions but he decided to withdraw altogether,’’ Cubillo said.

“We’re still going through the process and we’re hoping to make an announcement towards the end of this week which we’re excited about.

“That will be based on plans we have to get someone in place long term.’’

Motlop, a premiership player at North Melbourne in 1999, was left shattered by the rejection.

“I wanted a three-year deal and the deal they offered me was one year with a plan to put Robbie Hale in place, whether I won a premiership or whatever,’’ he said.

“So regardless of any success I would have, there was no chance of going on after that, which to me was ridiculous.

“I waited a long time to coach Wanderers and now they’ve created another agenda and made decisions out of my control,’’ he said.

“It’s my club, but it’s going to be hard for me to have anything to do with Wanderers from now on from my perspective.’’

Motlop said his family has always been supportive of him, including his extended family.

The long and extensive Motlop connection at Wanderers has been instrumental in the club’s recent success.

Cousins Aaron and Thomas won Chaney medals as the best player on the ground in the club’s premiership years and several other cousins and brothers have worn the blue and gold jumper.

“There’ll definitely be no hard feelings if any of them stay at Wanderers, but I won’t be there,’’ Shannon said.

“There are other coaching options at the Tiwi Bombers and Palmerston, but I’ve always said the only reason I would coach was because I wanted to coach Wanderers.

“I have never had any passion to coach anywhere else, Wanderers are my club.’’
