A second Australian national team will grace the Top Ends’ cricket ovals later this month.

Ahead of their title defence later this year, the Australian women’s one-day international squad will spend a week in the NT sun, May 25-30.

The team will complete a training clinic at the DXC Arena facilities before embarking on a two-day trip to Kakadu as, ‘part of the team’s commitment to learning about and celebrating culture.’

With seven World Cup titles to its name, the women’s side are looking to earn a record breaking eighth title, a number that would dwarf the men’s five.

With the upcoming men’s T20 internationals later this year and the Australian men’s cricketers with an Intellectual Disability Team having just completed a week long training camp, the visit bodes well of the possibility of Darwin hosting more international matches.

Head coach of the women’s team Shelly Nitschke said the trip is an important step in preparations.

“The players are returning from a well-earned break after a big summer and we’re looking forward to getting back together in the Top End later this month,” Nitschke said.

“It’s an important camp for us as we begin preparations and really set the scene for the upcoming season which includes a world cup and home multi-format series against India.

“We’re all really looking forward to the trip to Kakadu as an opportunity to educate ourselves on the Indigenous culture in the region and thank NT Cricket for making the whole week possible.”

NT Cricket’s head of cricket Nick Winter said the visit will be sure to ‘inspire’ local juniors and girls.

“It’s exciting to welcome a second Australian team here in less than a month and we’re thrilled to have Alyssa Healy and her side on hand to inspire our next generation of young female cricketers,” he said.

“These athletes are incredible role models and it’s a tremendous opportunity for us to help connect them with the local community.”
