JUST a couple of months ago, winning jockey Simon Miller from the $135,000 bet365 Palmerston Sprint described Mayameen as “fat and hairy”.

On Saturday, the three-year-old filly showed her rapid progression under trainer Chris Nash to take out the Territory’s most lucrative sprint race.

Her classy finish to edge out Jason Manning’s Niewand (jockey Vanessa Arnott) – who held the lead – would have had seasoned trainers jealous at her quick development as a top-class sprinter.

“It’s terrific to get the win. There are only a couple of races up here that as a local you target every year so to get it is incredible,” Nash said.

“Everyone wants to win a race like this and it all went to plan for us to be honest.

“The danger was she may get caught wide but she stuck with the leader and we knew she was always going to be tough in the last 100m.

“Winning this just shows how good she is.”

The young short-distance filly might have a well-earned break now after an incredible four wins from five starts in Darwin from April 9.

“Don’t know what else is next for her. She will probably go down south for a spell,” Nash said.
