An up-and-coming model with a background in equestrian and an avid interest in racing has been named the Darwin Cup Carnival’s 2023 ambassador.

Darwin resident Tannwyn Lewis has already taken on several fashion shows across the country and proved a no-brainer selection when she put her name forward for the coveted role.

Ms Lewis has been a long-time supporter of the Darwin Turf Club and said she was honoured to take on the position for the sport she has loved for a long time.

And as ambassador for the event she said she couldn’t wait to show off the very best of Territory fashion.

“Horses have been a passion of mine since I was a child, and I enjoy everything that it encompasses including the thrill of thoroughbred racing,” she said.

“I can’t wait to showcase some of our wonderful retailers and designers over this period and already have some great ideas which I can’t wait to share.”

Ms Lewis has both Indigenous and Welsh descent and hopes to use her new-found platform to be a role model for the young Indigenous community hoping to follow in her footsteps.

“I’m passionate about empowering younger people especially with my heritage and connection to first nations people,” she said.

“I look forward to hopefully presenting myself within this role as a positive role model in my community.”

Darwin Turf Club chief executive Grant Dewsbury said Ms Lewis was an outstanding choice for the role as this year’s carnival ambassador.

“Tannwyn is a big supporter of the Darwin Turf Club and has been a frequent attendee of many Darwin Cups,” Mr Dewsbury said.

“She also has a background in equestrian and has a genuine love of horses. There’s no doubt Tannwyn will prove to be a great advocate for Darwin’s showpiece event.”

He also said ticket sales for this year event were going strong with new events to take place on the big day.

“Ticket sales are once again strong for this year’s Darwin Cup,” Mr Dewsbury said.

“We’re incorporating new areas and events on the Day with Centerfield opening up on Darwin Cup Day to be a real party zone for the General Public with a distinct festival feel.

“Some major announcements are soon to be made within at least 3 headline acts appearing on stage for the entire day and then continue right through to the after-party.”

The Darwin Cup Carnival commences on July 8 and runs through to August 7 with tickets on sale through the Darwin Turf Club website.
