Replay: Southern Districts v Darwin Buffaloes - NTFL Round 13

A Territory AFL player and an AFLW premiership winner will lead the NTFL representative sides against the visiting Essendon VFL and VFLW outfits.

Former Fremantle draftee and current Nightcliff captain Ryan Nyhuis will lead out a men’s side full of talent including Saints’ Nate Paredes dual Nichols Medal winner Brodie Filo.

Nyhuis was picked at number 34 in the 2016 Rookie Draft after playing juniors at Tigers and having a stint at Peel Thunder in the WAFL, and went on to play 17 games for the Dockers.

Proven representative performers such as Braedon McLean and Jayden Margro are also in the squad alongside former AFL players Jed Anderson and Sam Darley.

Meanwhile, PINT star Jasmyn Hewett will lead the women, having previously played for St Mary’s, kicking 32 goals in 16 games, before moving to the Greenants where she has made her name.

She was drafted to Adelaide at number 16 in the 2017 AFLW Draft, had a brief stint with the Gold Coast Suns, and later returned to Adelaide playing in the 2022 premiership win.

The ruck has had plenty of success with PINT, getting best on ground in both the 2020-21 and 2022-23 grand final wins, and winning the women’s best and fairest in the 2020-21 season.

Hewett leads an exciting team full of talent including Billie Byers, Jemma Iacono, Tatyana Perry and two-time best and fairest winner Molly Althouse.

The NTFL Buffaloes has a perfect record against the Essendon Bombers, winning against the Victorian side in 1986, 1989, 1994 and 1998.

But the visiting sides won’t be without some Territory flavour of their own with the Tiwi Bombers represented in the men’s squad through Kim Kantilla, Brendan Kantilla and Karlson Kantilla.

Meanwhile the likes of Maria Rioli and Freda Puruntatameri have been listed for the women’s Bombers outfit, strengthening the club’s connection with the Tiwi Islands.

The matches take place on Wednesday with discounted pre-sale tickets available through INTIX until Tuesday.

The women’s match starts at 6pm, while the men’s will be from 7.45pm.
