ST Mary’s star midfielder Nick Yarran marked his NRL NT A-grade debut for Darwin Brothers with two tries contributing to his side’s big win over South Darwin.

The 2016-17 NTFL NT News Rising Star played in his favoured position of halfback and took full advantage of the opportunity.

Yarran grew up playing for Brothers through the junior grades before stepping away for about eight years.

But his years of footy have steered him well for Brothers with his strong kicking and defending on display in the 90-4 win against Rabbitohs.

Cleal looking for consistency from Brothers

“I was little nervous during the week but I did all right scoring a couple tries, defending and just doing the little things well,” Yarran told the NT News.

“Directing the play from halfback was good. I’ve got a bit of leadership from playing footy so I’m constantly talking throughout the game.

“A lot of respect to Souths they came to play and stuck it out. We just made sure to complete our sets and we will be hoping to set a consistent platform from here into the tougher games.

“Last year I was playing B-grade over the last six weeks of the competition but this year I think it’s my commitment that has got me picked up for the top side.”

Yarran also played in the opening two rounds of the CAFL for South featuring in the club’s efforts against Rovers and Pioneer.

With match fitness behind him in both footy and league he will be looking to bring his physical style of game directly into the NTFL.

“I was lucky enough to go down and play a couple of games for Souths. It was a good experience playing down there,” Yarran said.

“Unsure if I will go back down based on flights but I loved playing there. I will probably stick with rugby for now. This was my junior club growing up and getting to play A-grade was the dream.

“Just that physical toughness will set me up for the NTFL. I’m a pretty aggressive footy player and it’s great to be getting that match fitness. It’s that hardness and tackling that I pride myself on.”
