Pioneer beat Federal with last gasp goal to win Round 10 of the 2024 CAFL season

Pioneer were trailing with less than a minute left on the clock, but a major from their full forward got them over the line against reigning premiers Federal. Read the latest CAFL action.

Kimberley goal kicker and new Pioneer spearhead Waylon Manson has come back to haunt his former club Federal after the CAFL Eagles beat the reigning premier by three points.

Manson booted seven goals in Pioneer’s 11.10 (76) to 11.7 (73) win, including the winning major with less than a minute left on the timeclock.

The nailbiting win was the second time the Eagles have beaten Federal by less than a goal this season after their five-point win back in Round 3.

Joint coach Adrian McAdam, who shares the role with Steven Hayes, said it had been a bitter-sweet afternoon for the club.

“We did our best to hand the game to Feds, it was pretty frustrating watching the players make bad decisions when we should have had the game under control a long way from home,” McAdam said.

“But the good news was we got over the line by kicking the last three goals of the game, with Waylon’s seventh goal giving us the four points.”

Manson’s contribution in front of goals made him Pioneer’s best player, along with Ethan Liddle around the ball and Jackson Cole in his familiar defensive role.

Rovers won their second game under first year coach John Glasson when they beat Wests by 44 points at Traeger Park.

The Double Blues turned on the power after half-time when they kicked eight goals to three in their 17.10 (112) to 11.2 (68) win.

Glasson was pleased with his side’s goal kicking spread and the collective efforts from the players.

“Every win is a handy win and in our case this was a good one, with a lot of players putting their hands up.” he said.

Four-goal forward Adam Cullen continued his splendid season at centre half-forward, while Liam Byrne and Dylan Barry out of the middle and Connor Dunne down back were other good players for Rovers.

Sam Mader and Dominic Maher stood out for Wests, who pushed Rovers for two quarters.

In the Senior Women, Rovers maintained their unbeaten start to the season when Pioneer forfeited their 10am game at Albrecht Oval because of a lack playing numbers.

The Ben Ellis coached Wests jumped to second on the ladder when they beat reigning premier Alkamilya by 53 points in their 11.30am game at Traeger Park.

Midfielder Harriot Scandol was superb in a black and red jumper, with Kelsey Squire and Hannah Murdoch up forward important contributors in the win.

And Federal won its first game of the season in emphatic fashion when it steamrolled an inexperienced Souths side by 135 points at Albrecht Oval.

Libby Taylor kicked four goals in a best on ground performance out of the middle, while Danika McDonald and Brittany Hogan kicked three of Federal’s 20.15 (135) to nil win.

Chloe Pitt and Charlotte Rudd were creative up forward for the red and whites, who broke their winning drought under new coach Jackson Ankers.
