Quartet of Nightcliff stars on report following round 1 NTFL loss to St Mary’s

A quartet of Nightcliff stars have been charged following their opening round NTFL men’s premier league loss to St Mary’s at TIO Stadium on Saturday.

A QUARTET of Nightcliff stars have been charged following their opening round NTFL men’s premier league loss to St Mary’s at TIO Stadium on Saturday.

Michael Mummery, Wade Derksen, John Butcher and Trent Melville were all caught out for separate infringements throughout the encounter.

Mummery was charged with rough conduct against Saints’ Lachlan Taylor in the second quarter.

The match review panel ruled that the incident should be classified as intentional conduct with low impact and high contact resulting in a two match penalty, reduced to one match with an early guilty plea.

Derksen was later pinged for rough conduct against Nick Yarran in the third quarter of the same game.

The conduct was classified as carless with low impact and high contact resulting in a one match penalty, reduced to a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

Also from the reigning premiers Butcher was charged with striking Matthew Green during the fourth quarter.

Based on evidence it was viewed that the incident would be classified as carless conduct with low impact and high contact resulting in a one match penalty.

However, as with Derksen Butcher was allowed to accept a reprimand if he made an early guilty plea.

2019-20 Chaney Medallist Melville was also caught by the match review panel following what was deemed rough conduct against Saints ruckman Ryan Smith in the fourth quarter in the Saturday match-up.

Based on evidence Melville’s conduct was classified as careless conduct with low impact and high contact resulting in a one match penalty.

He can accept a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

The charges come as added insult to injury for the side that lost 12.9 (81) to 10.9 (69) to their grand final rivals.

The Tigers will look to bounce back from the loss next week when they return to their home ground of the Darwin Mazda Nightcliff Oval.

There they will face a Waratah side fresh off a hefty 18.15 (123) to 8.3 (51) round 1 win over the Palmerston Magpies.

As a result the Magpies will also be looking to right the ship in round 2 when they face off another side looking for their opening win of the season the Tiwi Bombers at Cazalys Oval on Saturday.

Also playing on the Saturday is St Mary’s who face Wanderers at Tracy Village.

And on the Sunday the Darwin Buffaloes will take on a fired up Southern Districts side at Cazalys Oval.
