Dirt and rubber is set to fly as the nation’s top drivers put their pedal to the metal at this year’s Chariots of Thunder.
A showcase of adrenaline educing action, Northline Speedway will host the drivers as they battle it out from September 12-14 at the Hidden Valley Motorsports Complex.
Australian champion Lachlan McHugh will be among the 30-plus drivers tackling the event, with a number of locals also getting in on the action, all chasing a share of the $130,000 prize pool.
Wingless Sprints and Junior Sedans will also be on the cards, expanding the already chock-a-block schedule, showcasing the growing local division to the rest of the nation.
This year will also see a Fan Appreciation Night (Wednesday) featuring a sprintcar motorcade that will take to Darwin’s city streets from 5.30pm, beginning at the Esplanade and arriving at The Precinct by 5.40pm.
Festivities will continue at The Precinct from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and feature vehicle displays, merchandise sales and a chance to meet your favourite drivers.
On Friday night, the much anticipated return of the Pole-Shuffle Challenge will occur, putting an additional $30-45k on the line for the drivers.
“The Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series is more than just a race, it’s a spectacular event that brings together the entire community,” Northline Speedway president Caleb Gotts said.
“With heart-stopping action on the track and a lively atmosphere, it’s a fantastic experience for fans of all ages.
“Whether you’re a die-hard motorsport enthusiast or just looking for a fun night out, this is an event the whole family can enjoy.”
Acting chief executive of NT Major Events Trevor Cox said the event was a fantastic occasion, bringing together people from across the country on and off the track.
“Chariots of Thunder is a tightly contested Sprintcar event that attracts people from across Australia to compete and watch. The event is not only at the track, with the motorcade and Fan Appreciation Night encouraging visitors to experience local tourism and hospitality offerings, which is great news for our economy.”
