HE is a superstar of the NTFL, but prolific goalkicker Will Farrer also loves running around in rural competitions – and having a positive impact on small communities and his teammates.

The Southern Districts forward booted six goals for Katherine South – now with five wins and two losses – in its 19.9 (123) to 9.10 (64) win over Ngukurr Bulldogs in the Big Rivers Football League at Jilkminggan Oval on Sunday.

Farrer kicked a whopping 111 goals for the Crocodiles in the 2015-16 NTFL season, and was also the competition’s leading goalkicker in 2019-20, with 52.

But helping country football clubs remain competitive – while uplifting his teammates and establishing a winning culture – means just as much to him as any individual accolade.

“I think I kicked six (against Ngukurr). I kicked a few and gave off a few – I was just trying to get the boys involved,” Farrer told the NT News.

“One of the young fellas also kicked six and he was on fire – Jeffrey (McDonald).

“They call him the Wizard.”

Will and his brother Josiah – also a standout at the Crocodiles in the midfield – are highly respected at Ouyen United in Victoria’s Sunraysia League for continually flying long distances to help the team remain competitive.

They combined in its premiership triumph in 2018.

Both Farrers then represented NT Thunder in the 2019 NEAFL competition, before Victoria’s COVID-19 crisis stopped them from going back down to the Mildura region this year, leading to both being massive pick-ups for Katherine South in 2020.

“The team we’re playing for – they’re bloody awesome blokes and they’ve welcomed us in,” Farrer said.

“So coming down every week is just like playing for an NTFL club.

“There are a few Districts boys running around. A few didn’t play (on Sunday), but me, Jonno (Farrrar) and Josiah played, and Matt Duffy played as well.

“We’ve been playing in Mildura the past few years, and I had a bit of a break from that and played for Thunder last year.

“I was going to go back home (to Kununurra in the east Kimberley region in Western Australia) but COVID put a bit of a stop to that, so I decided to come here and have a run.

“I’m just trying to find that love for footy again because the NTFL can be draining.”

With speculation now squashed by both Districts and Palmerston officials that the Farrers were set for a shock move to the Magpies in 2020-21, Farrer said he was looking forward to playing under new coach Matt Cannard next NTFL season.

“Cannard will always be remembered as a legend of the club,” Farrer said.

“To have him finish up his playing career and then coach us it was always going to happen.

“All the boys are stepping it up now he’s finally got that chance.”
