Replay: PINT v St Mary's - 2024-25 NTFL Women's Premier League Round 3

The PINT women scored five of the last six goals to pip a Saints side that had led all night in the women’s grand final rematch.

St Mary’s, fueled by their grand final loss, brought all the fire early, but it wasn’t quite enough to hold off last year’s premiers.

PINT powered home and with just minutes left on the clock Steph Lawrence and Zhoe Clarke combined for two goals to send them home with a 7.4 (46) to 6.7 (43) win.

The Green Machine were a different side to what they had in their Round 1 loss, with some of their more senior players including defender Janet Baird back into the fold.

Saints instantly showed what they were made of, particularly inspired to take down the outfit that narrowly beat them in last year’s grand final.

Billie Byers was her busy self in the midfield alongside Caitlin Sargent and Ciaralii Parnell, while Paula Pavic had the measure of the ruck battle with Jasmyn Hewett missing for PINT.

And fairly quickly they had the ball in the hands of Grace Senior, who got the work done in front of goal to propel her side to an early and important lead.

However, leads are never safe against a side with the players and recent history of the Queenants, and it was only a matter of time until they came back themselves.

PINT had a couple of big ins from SANFL side West Adelaide, including their captain Madison Russell and Iilish Ross.

They worked their way into the contest alongside usual midfield standout and captain Reni Hicks, and bit by bit the Queenants also found their way into the game.

Amy Chittick brought some forward impetuous and fed her reliable forwards in Steph Lawrence and Casey Morris to narrow a 21 point half time deficit to just one at three quarter time.

Saints drew plenty from having the wind at their back in the final period and once again pushed out the margin when Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn scored a popular goal.

But PINT still had the momentum in their favour and when missed kicks went against Saints, they struck through the middle of the ground.

Despite the best efforts of Baird and her defence, the Queenants kept coming and the impact showed as they eventually burst through first with Lawrence, and then with Zhoe Clarke.

Not only did that send them ahead for the first time of the match, but was also enough to see them home.

PREVIEW

The PINT and St Mary’s women will clash in a women’s grand final rematch that will give a strong indication of where both sides sit for this season.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash from 6.30pm on Saturday.

The Queenants have gone two for two so far in the 2024-25 season, but a late fightback from the Buffettes in Round 1 suggested they aren’t quite the finished article just yet.

Their usual performers such as Reni Hicks and Jasmyn Hewett have been strong so far as expected, while Steph Lawrence remains the go to goal scorer.

Meanwhile, a young Saints side were beaten in their Round 1, but with the freshness a week off gains and the hunger for revenge expect them to bring a fight.

Caitlin Sargent and Paula Pavic were among the standouts for the Green Machine in the league opener, and will need to be again against the benchmark side.
