Replay: Nightcliff v Palmerston (Women) - 2024-25 NTFL semi finals

A late flurry of goals have secured Nightcliff victory in the NTFL women’s knockout semi-final against a dogged Palmerston outfit.

The Tigers had the Magpies’ number throughout the season and a swift Tshinta Kendall goal in the opening quarter set the tone for another result in their favour.

But Palmerston’s young guns and hard defence meant the goals didn’t come easy until the game broke open in the second half, one the Tigers developed into a 10.10 (70) to 3.2 (20) triumph.

Kendall’s step and pace allowed Nightcliff to quickly build a two goal lead, but unlike in their qualifying final against St Mary’s the week before it was one they built on.

The Tigers dominated the ball out of the middle of the whether from Sally Evans runs off half back or the work rate of AFLW ruck Fleur Davies.

Their defence was equally as important with Hannah Turnbull and Sophie Hatzismalis repelling many a Palmerston attempt, or the lockdown work on Tatyana Perry.

Hannah Garland got plenty of the footy and was dangerous sending the ball forward in a hot time slot where a lead would be hard to chase down.

The Tigers were also able to throw Davies closer to goal to chop out for the league’s leading goal scorer Cassie McWilliam as a tall marking forward.

Palmerston had their usual excitement to prove they both deserve to be playing at this stage of the competition and that their young group is going places.

Marika Carlton was again brave both on the tackle and in throwing her hand up to run the ball, but she was someone who Nightcliff was very wise too.

It gave Taelah Smith the chance to show her talents as she managed the ball on the way for her sides first goal of the match.

Jorja Davey notched a thriller of a goal late in the piece too working in tandem with club legend Natasha Medbury, in possibly her final game, to send a dribbler through.

But by that stage the Tigers had it all wrapped up opening space for McWilliam to have her impact up forward and send through a flurry of majors late in the piece to take any doubt out of mind.

PREVIEW

Nightcliff find themselves in a knock out women’s semi-final against a Palmerston outfit full of confidence after winning their first finals match in six years.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 12.15pm on Saturday.

The Tigers have beaten the Magpies by at least 30 points each time they’ve met, with their last loss coming all the way back in February 2020.

Their most recent encounter was only two weeks ago in Round 18 where Nightcliff sent off their last home game of the season on a positive note.

They have all the pieces to continue that run of wins with Gabrielle Deller a frequent ball winner alongside the likes of Sophie Hatzismalis, Sally Evans and Eliza Hand.

Nightcliff have plenty of threats up front with Cassie McWilliam, one needing to make an impact after being kept quiet versus Saints, and Mickayla Ward, who is now back in the picture.

Palmerston, however, proved in their resounding defeat of the Tiwi Bombers that despite being a young outfit they’ve turned up primed for finals.

Any result for now on would exceed their early season expectations and while the premiership will be on their mind they’ve shown they deserve to mix it with the top sides.

Marika Carlton had a best on ground performance against the Bombers, breaking the game open time after time with her natural talent and direct running.

Tatyana Perry was another to impress securing the win with a four-goal final quarter building on the efforts of the likes of Ella Ward in the middle.
