A contest that saw neither side really get on much of a roll, the second round match-up between Nightcliff and PINT delivered a very early-season-esque game of footy.
Playing out at Nightcliff in the heat and with shortened quarters, the boys from PINT showed their grit, putting together a comfortable win following their embarrassing second half fade in round one.
A rather low scoring affair, it was PINT who got out to an early lead through Andrew Jones after he was awarded a free kick in the 50, a recurring theme for the night.
Up 20-8 at the quarter break, PINT added 14 headed into the half, the Tigers putting eight on the board.
The third saw a bit more action, as the lights came on and the mozzies came out to play, so did the rough and tumble of the Greenants and Tigers’ big men.
A number of scuffles broke out during the quarter, with Tigers again falling foul, through their own ill discipline, awarding PINT a number of open marks and penalty shots in front of goal, and took the game to a 19-point contest into the last.
The fourth saw the yellow and black fight back, actually putting together decent passages of play, however they left their charge too late, succumbing to the ants in a scrappy 62-42 margin.
Greenants’ captain and big man Matt Ryan said after the contest that his side were eager to right the wrongs of their collapse last weekend against the Buffaloes.
“We were right on top at the start (last week) and then we just ran out of legs towards the end,” Ryan said.
“So the message this week was to just start well and hold on, keep playing our game and keep on a roll.
The captain explained that the loss and win this week were purely down to the side’s mental game.
“It’s all a mindset,” he said.
“We knew that we had to be a lot stronger and a lot smarter with how we played the footy, how we used the ball, how we shut it down in the back and overall just how we approached the game.”
Despite the win, Ryan was not too pleased with some of the errors his side made, aware that there is still room for improvement.
“We made a lot of skill errors,” he said.
“We weren’t really hitting all those kicks through the middle, which cut us up at times but yeah, in terms of what we need to improve, skill areas would be the most important.”

New recruit Jonathan Lanyon and dual Nichols medallist Brodie Filo were also standouts in the encounter, running the show from the midfield.
And at home for the first time this season they will be hoping to make an impression again.
Meanwhile, PINT were left to rue a late fade against the Darwin Buffaloes, which left them with a loss in the season opener.
But they showed that they have the talent to mix with the best this season with Steven Motlop and Liam Holt-Fitz in their arsenal.
Established Greenants also stood up early on with captain Matt Ryan and Silver Yousif both influential in front of goal.
Full replays of the match will be posted here following the game’s finish.
