Replay: Darwin v St Mary's - NTFL Women's Premier League Round 9

The St Mary’s women have retained their spot in the Women’s Premier League top two with a strong win over a Buffettes side, which fronted up for the contest.

Saints have been one of the frontrunners in the women’s league all season and, despite a late flurry from their foes, held on to win 6.8 (44) to 4.0 (24).

The Green Machine dominated early, with midfield leaders Emily Forshaw and Billie Byers catching their foes out with their intensity.

And though St Mary’s weren’t the most accurate in front of goal, they had the lion’s share of opportunities as a result of their midfield victories.

Jo Miller was another who was strong at the contest early on and eventually the goals came for Saints’ leading goal kicker Emma Start and Grace Senior.

Meanwhile, the Buffettes didn’t even hit the scoreboard before halftime despite the pressure they brought to every contest.

But they kicked off the second half in style, with Kiara Henry getting her first of the day within a minute.

The Double Blues’ body pressure started to have an impact as the game wore on and they got more numbers around the footy as a result.

Two-time best-and-fairest winner Molly Althouse was a leader in the midfield, while Lucy Louis and Henry also had plenty of the ball in the back of the match

A thrilling goal from Amber Wunungmurra ignited the Buffettes and it looked as if they could run over the top of their rivals.

But Saints held their cool and did everything they could to slow the game down enough to secure another win.

PREVIEW

St Mary’s are targeting a top two finish in women’s Premier League, but with half the season to go they need a win against the fifth-placed Buffettes to keep the challengers at bay.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream all the action from 2pm on Saturday.

Saints have been on fire so far this season, winning all but one their matches, that loss coming against the still undefeated PINT.

They have big-time performers across the field, including captain Emily Forshaw, onballer Billie Byers and young ruck Paula Pavic.

Emma Stark is listed to return to the fold and will likely add to the 27 goals she has already accumulated this season.

Darwin and St Mary’s is the big women’s game on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the 2021-22 premiership-winning Buffettes suffered a heavy defeat to Waratah last week, and will be eager to make amends.

Experienced campaigners such as Molly Althouse and Machaelia Roberts will be focal points and will need to be at their best if they are to pull their side through this one.

A full replay of the match will be posted here following the end of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
