NTFL 2022-23: Watch Waratah vs PINT Round 13 livestream

Waratah stamped down their authority at Gardens Oval to fend off a highly competitive PINT side. WATCH THE REPLAY.

Replay: NTFL Round 13 - Waratah v PINT

The Greenants were left to rue a third quarter of wasted opportunities as Waratah finally put its foot down in the last to win by 27 points at Gardens Oval.

PINT controlled most of the play and enjoyed repeated forward entries but could only muster 1.4 as Tahs coughed up just two points of their own.

Leading by the slimmest of margins at the final break, some Marcus Wattie brilliance, at both ends of the ground, set up Adam Gulden’s second major for the home team.

And after two costly 50m penalties, which offered goals to Will Collis and Jayden Magro on a dinner plate, the home team was suddenly 20 points clear in the biggest lead of the night.

With Thomas Cree also a brute force for the red and whites, Waratah would maintain its position in second place on the Men’s Premier League ladder, winning 11.8 (74) to 6.11 (47).

Earlier, while it wasn’t particularly pretty between the arcs at a boggy-in-parts Gardens Oval, the goals were spectacular with Silver Yousif’s first quarter snap, deep in the right pocket, easily a goal of the year contender for PINT.

While Yousif’s magic was quickly answered through the left boot of Gulden, it would be Magro’s quarter.

The league’s leading goal kicker, with 37 coming into Round 13, put further separation between himself and his nearest rival, Jackson Calder, with three first term majors to give Waratah some early impetus.

His first two were from set shots from around the same spot; converting marks in the scoreboard pocket, before roving brilliantly for his third.

However, the second term lingered in the memory for two pieces of sublime forward line connection.

Robbie Turnbull found the chest of Tom Banuelos – who was a consistent marking option during the evening – with an absolute bullet off the boot.

Then, Henry Tregoweth’s delivery was almost as precise, finding Jett Trotter who, like Banuelos, also converted for six points.

And when big man Kyle Winter-Irving converted - spotted by Matt Ryan after the skipper stripped an opponent of the ball - PINT had pushed their noses in front.

However, key forward Darcy Hope, who had been well held until that point, launched two massive majors in the dying moments of the quarter; a booming set shot well beyond the arc sailed home after the siren to give the Warriors a nine-point buffer.

But a pair of third quarter misses to Winter-Irving summed up a term of butchered chances for PINT, who needed a win to keep in touch with the top five.

The final scoreboard perhaps did not reflect an even contest which could easily have been decided by a much smaller margin.

Post-match, Dylan Collis, who was reportedly rushed to ER for observation after a severe bout of leather poisoning, dominated across the park after starting in the middle.

“All our intensity and effort was there all game, we just weren’t getting on top,” Collis said of the opening three quarters.

“(PINT) play a really good brand of footy … they’ve rarely been beaten by more than a couple of goals.

“They didn’t take their chance. But credit to our back six.”
