Replay: NTFL Round 16 - Tiwi Bombers vs Wanderers

Former AFL star Steven Motlop showed his class in a 12-goal outing stealing some pride back for Wanderers against the Tiwi Bombers in Round 16.

Neither Wanderers nor Tiwi have quite had the season they would have hoped for, but their Round 16 clash at Gardens Oval was still played with plenty of passion.

However, it was the Muk Muks who had the better of the contest winning 23.17 (155) to 10.5 (65), and the former Port Adelaide forward was the star of the show.

And he was the one to get matters underway kicking deep into a fairly open backline to give Matthew Motlop the first major of the day.

Tiwi were quick to respond playing solid footy and moving the ball through the hands until Sam Darley was able to kick into the waiting arms of Harley Bennell who finished the move.

That fightback was limited as Wanderers absolutely dominated the opening quarter with booming kicks from Caleb Niki and Ed Simpson ticking the scoring alongside Motlop.

It was Wanderers 2019-20 Nichols Medalist Beau O’Connell who stood out in the midfield running all day and playing a key role in the supply chain into the forwards.

As they have been many times Tiwi were their own worst enemies giving away free kicks and fifties to further compound their deficit.

They, however, did find themselves with some go forward early in the second quarter when a clever kick from Brayden Rioli found Thomas Holding, however a rushed play ruined the chance.

It wasn’t the last opportunity they had when coming down the scoring end with Dion Munkara managing to strip Motlop of the ball.

The moment allowed Munkara to regather the ball, run into space and snap a goal, and his efforts were soon followed by another major through Stanley Tipiloura.

The Bombers’ purple patch didn’t stop there with the likes of Desmond Tipuamantumirri and Paddy Heenan finding a foothold directly leading to an exciting grubber goal for John Tipiloura.

And while they had more goals to come namely another moment of magic from Munkara and two majors to Jason Burke.

But ultimately the day belonged to Wanderers with their backline greats Mitchel Taylor and Brodie Newman limiting chances and building momentum on the rebound.

From there O’Connell, Nathan Arbon and Thomas Boyes were able to feed their forwards all day, and O’Connell in particular could have grabbed a couple himself if he didn’t pass them off to Motlop.

Motlop showed signs of injury later on, but as time rolled on he kept the goals coming.

“It’s been an up and down year for us. We’ve been fairly consistent some games, but lack of depth cost us in the end,” Motlop said after his 12-goal game.

“But it’s good to get reward at the end of the year and have a good win, everyone played their part.

“We’ve got a really strong backline who we build our attack off and we pride ourselves on being a running team so getting quick ball to our forwards goes a long way to us winning games.

“I had some great service from O’Connell, Boyes and Arbon. It’s been a tough year for me, I’ve been carrying a foot injury so I’m just looking forward to one more game and a rest at the end.

“I always dreamt of coming back home and playing with my family and best friends, so while we haven’t performed at the level I thought we would I’ve enjoyed being back here.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

Expect hard running and plenty of pace when the Tiwi Bombers and Wanderers compete for pride in what promises to be a fierce Round 16 face-off.

And the NT News will be there to livestream every minute of the game exclusively for you from 2pm, Saturday.

The Tiwi Bombers have struggled all year, but potentially be topping up with all their best players to snatch a win from the side immediately above them.

Josh Carter, Harley Bennell and Sam Darley all carry experience, while the x-factor of Dion Munkara and Stanley Tipiloura may get Tiwi over the line as they hunt their second win of the season.

Wanderers will have also wanted more from their season with talent across their list, but for one reason or another their finishing has not been where it has needed to be.

Still they have several players who have stood out including Brodie Newman, Mitchel Taylor and Beau O’Connell and those should be enough to help see the side through.

But with these two teams being so close on the table anything is possible for this match-up.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
