Waratah have soared straight into the women’s grand final after overrunning minor premiers PINT in the major semi-final.
PINT had been the team to beat all season winning the minor premiership on the back of 15 wins from 16 games, including victories in both matches against Waratah.
But the Tahs came in with momentum which alongside a solid defensive effort carried the red and whites to a 4.11 (35) to 3.4 (22) win, allowing them direct entry to the grand final.
Some typically strong tap downs from Jasmyn Hewett gave PINT the early clearances, and there was a hint they would be first to get some points on the board.
Instead the Waratah defence held strong and soon enough it was excitement machine Aggie Singh racing down field in the opposite direction.
And despite her shot on goal going awry it was a statement of intent from the Tahs that defined their game.
It was the first of several missed opening quarter chances that the Tahs left begging instead scoring behinds despite their ascendency coming out of midfield.
After a streak of four behinds it was Jordan Mifsud, who was impressive in defence in the first week of finals, who scored the opening goal.
The score woke up the Queenants, who had gone two weeks out of NTFL action, and some footy smarts from Jasmyn Hewett and Sarah Ingram allowed Casey Morris an opportunistic goal.
The score gave PINT some momentum going into the second term and with Steph Lawrence booting a goal and Amy Chittick busy it looked as if the Greenants were on their way to another win.
But the Waratah defence held strong particularly Shelby Koh, Brittany Daly and Sharona Bishop, while Lauren Pluker limited the impact of Hillary Grubb.
However, most impactful was Steph O’Brien who racked up positions and was in the middle of everything.
Skipper Kierra Zerafa was also hugely impactful whether it was smothering kicks or setting an attacking move into motion, one resulting in a goal for Lisa Miceli.
Add on big game moments from Singh and 2021-22 Rising Star Annabel Kievet and PINT were almost completely locked out of the contest, even though their defensive end did shine.
Matters broke up a bit in the final quarter favouring the Greenants, but the margin was too much for PINT to overcome and they succumbed to just their second loss of the season.
“Such a good feeling to win after they beat us twice in the regular season,” Zerafa said.
“But to beat them now just gives us that confidence going into that grand final knowing we can beat them.
“We’ve not had our best team on the field when we’ve faced them before, and finals is such a different game where whoever wants it most gets the win.
“All our girls played their roles perfectly, I couldn’t be prouder of them. They all gave 100 percent and it showed out there.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW
The PINT and Waratah women both have a shot at soaring straight into the grand final when they clash in what promises to be an enthralling major semi-final.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the whole match exclusively for you from 2.15pm, Saturday.
The Queenants are on track to notch their second-ever women’s premiership, having won all but one of their regular season matches.
But they will be wary of this encounter having had two weeks away from the action while everyone else have been building.
However, PINT have beaten the Tahs comfortably in both their previous match-ups, and with big game players across their list can make this another difficult afternoon for the red and whites.
Waratah did send a statement against St Mary’s in a wet qualifying final using their versatility to get the better of the conditions.
With the weather likely to come into the play again Waratah will come in fairly confident with that experience already behind them.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
