Coaching the boys side is Territory-born, former Gold Coast Titans NRL player Sam Irwin, who is an example of just how far someone from Darwin can go in the game.

Meanwhile, Darwin Brothers captain and NRL NT premiership-winning U17s coach Bianca Scrymgour will take the reins of the girls side.

NRL NT pathways manager Duncan MacGillivray said a long preparation period had the two sides poised to hit the ground running.

“We generally turn up and we compete year in and year out, we don’t always get the win but we do compete,” MacGillivray said.

“Compared to bigger states, we don’t quite have the numbers to pick from, but we’re always relatively strong and we always turn up and have a go.

“Sam’s a local born and bred product. He’s a former NRL player who has come through all the systems in this environment, and proves there is a pathway for any aspirational young talent.

“And Bianca recently went through the Gems where she was mentored by Brad Donald and learned a lot, which we continuing to see grow since she’s come back.”

Darwin Brothers player Mele Tupou will be one to watch, having co-captained the U18s earlier in the year, and once again has a leadership role in the younger age group.

And in the boys, it’s Litchfield’s Deacon Summerville who has impressed selectors for both his on field and off field actions.

“Mele was one of our better players in the tournament and being younger she still qualifies for 16s,” MacGillivray said.

“She will be captain again, leading from the front, she plays with her heart on her sleeve and plays pretty tough.

“Meanwhile, the boys are all having a crack and have all been consistent, but the captain Deacon Summerville is one I have to pick out.

“He’s good on the field, but off the field he’s a dedicated volunteer for the Litchfield Bears, he referees as well, he’s pretty inspirational to be honest.”
