Western Australia avoided a late scare against Victoria to post their first win of the ASSRL Under-15 Nationals in Port Macquarie.

The boys from the west exploded out of the blocks, and led by two tries at the halftime break, before Victoria mounted a spirited late comeback.

The Victorian side even had one last opportunity to attack in the dying stages, but a dropped ball cost them a chance to level the scores with the WA side running out 16-12 winners on Sunday.

The two ASSRL Plate contenders were locked in a gruelling arm-wrestle for most of the first half, before a scrum penalty against the feeding team gave Western Australia an opportunity to attack the Victorian line.

They wasted little time with Darling Range Sports College backrower Brodie Shaw burrowing his way under the defence to score the opening try.

Western Australia halfback Tamarau Haimona pulled all the right strings for the boys in black and yellow setting up the next two tries, one through the boot and the other through a picture-perfect cut-out pass, to extend the lead out to 16 points early in the second half.

That was when the sleeping giants woke.

The Victorian forwards suddenly found inroads through the middle of the Western Australia defence, punching holes in a line that had previously been impenetrable.

Front rower Carlos Faaofo-Taula scored the first try with a rampaging run through the middle, before dummy-half Levi Kanongataa followed him across the stripe to set up the grandstand finish.

Match wrap: First Nations Goannas v Northern Territory

The First Nations Goannas have made a massive statement in their opening game of the ASSRL Under-15s Nationals, running rampant against the Northern Territory.

The Goannas middle men stomped a highway up the middle of Port Macquarie Regional Stadium, as the side ran in nine tries to one in an empahtic performance.

Innisfail State High’s Jimi Kusu and Condobolin High School fullback Kyran Nixon-Croaker both finished with impressive doubles as the Goannas ran out 46-6 winners on Sunday.

While their speed men filled up the score sheet, it was the work of the men in the middle of the park, led by skipper and bulldozing lock forward Xavier Williams-Byers, which were the key.

The Goannas forward pack were dominant, with front rower Ashton Allen (Rutherford High School) and backrower Jezaiah Charles (Murrumbidgee Regional High School) bending the Northern Territory line back with ease.

When Williams-Byers exploded through the Northern Territory defence at the halfway line before fending off three players on his way to the tryline, it was the third try in the opening 10 minutes, and had almost put the result beyond doubt.

The Goannas led by 32 at the half time break, and it would take almost 10 minutes in the second half before the NT side finally struck back on the scoreboard through centre Elijah Pomroy.

By that stage the match was over and the Goannas had fired a clear warning shot to the rest of the ASSRL Boys Plate contenders.

Match wrap: Queensland White v NSW Combined Catholic Colleges

Wavell State High fullback Timahna Tandy has stamped his authority on the ASSRL Under-15s Nationals in Port Macquarie, scoring a sizzling solo effort to help Queensland White come from behind in the dying stages against NSW Combined Catholic Colleges.

Working off the back of the dominant Queensland forward pack, Tandy sliced and diced his way through the NSWCCC defence in the final play of the game to secure a 12-8 victory on day two of the tournament.

Tandy was engulfed by his teammates as well as members of the Queensland Maroons squad watching on from the other side of the fence as the boys from the Sunshine State celebrated.

Queensland had been the better side for most of the gruelling contest, heading to the main break with a 6-0 lead.

But hard running on the edges helped NSWCCC fight thei way back into the contest, and when rampaging centre Cooper Morrison, from Edmund Rice College in Wollongong, crashed across with 15 minutes to go the boys in blue and white took the lead for the first time.

The loss makes it two on the trot for the NSWCCC side, and essentially rules them out of playing for silverware in the championship division.

The side will have two days off to lick their wounds before returning to the field to play off for the minor positions.

Queensland White will be back in action on Monday, when they clash with NSW Combined High Schools.

Day 2 Preview: Combined Catholic Colleges desperate for a result

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges will enter the second day of the ASSRL Nationals with a simple task: win, or go home.

After a tough loss to rivals NSW Combined High Schools on the opening day, the NSWCCC side has had little time to lick their wounds before they are back on the pitch in Port Macquarie.

The NSWCCC side will open a shortened day of action on Sunday when they clash with Queensland White.

The game is followed by two matches from the ASSRL Plate tournament featuring exciting sides Northern Territory, First Nations Goannas, Victoria and Western Australia.

NSWCCC will need to find something deep within ahead of their clash with Queensland White, which is proving must-win if they want to keep their bold dreams of winning the tournament alive.

Coach Aaron McDonald had plenty of confidence in his side heading into the tournament in Port Macquarie, and it is unlikely a first round loss would have dented it much.

“We’re going in with the aim to win the championship, we’re not shy to say that’s our goal,” McDonald said.

“We know it’s going to be tough, but we’re looking forward to having some strong competition.”

“Both Queensland sides are also historically very good and there’s that natural rivalry that’s always there whenever NSW plays a Queensland team.”

McDonald said he feeling ‘pretty confident’ despite only having limited time for preparation.

Charlie Xuereb is set to make a big impact.

“We’ve really only had three sessions so far, so we’ve been focusing on team unity,” McDonald said.

“How they come together as a group will determine how far they can go in the competition.”

The coach also talked up the wealth of talent within his squad.

“I think, easily, the one to watch from our side would be Chase Butler from All Saints,” he said.

“He’s just got that good bit of class, good at organising and has great field presence.

“We’ve also got Charlie Xuereb (Patrician Brothers Blacktown) who’s a really hard worker and could make a real impact.”
