The AFL is hopeful of closing the Jack Steven matter by the end of the week.

The Geelong midfielder is likely to return to full training in coming days.

It will be 17 days since Steven was stabbed in what has thus far remained a private matter.

It is understood AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is yet to receive a final report on the incident from the AFL integrity unit.

Victoria Police investigated the stabbing, which occurred in Melbourne in the early hours of May 16.

Steven took himself to Cabrini Hospital in Malvern where he remained for several days.

The 30-year-old completed light duties at Geelong last week but is expected to re-join his Cats teammates in full training this week.

He did not require surgery after the incident, and albeit unlikely, has not been ruled out of playing in Round 2.

Cats assistant coach Matthew Knights said late last week that coach Chris Scott would have to keep an “open mind” to selecting the former Saint against Hawthorn in 10 days’ time.

“He’s in decent shape and he’d done a lot of work over the seven-week period we were away from the club,” Knights told the Geelong Advertiser.

“He did a couple of sessions with Joel (Selwood) and I was lucky enough to do a couple of sessions with him and he had done some solid work over that period.

“He’s going to be an important player over the course of the season. Now we have to get him into game shape.”

It is not yet known if the full details of the incident will be presented to the public.
