Former premiership skipper shares why Paul Green can turn around the Brisbane Broncos

Paul Green quickly turned around one of Queensland’s most famous rugby league clubs almost a decade ago and this premiership skipper believes he can do it all again with the Brisbane Broncos. SEE WHY HERE.

When Paul Green arrived as coach of historic Queensland club, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, a decade ago – the club had failed to live up to their reputation as a powerhouse of the competition.

They barely made the finals and hadn’t won a premiership in 15 years.

But Green, a Seagulls junior, quickly turned the legendary club’s fortunes around and made them into a team which would then go on to win back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

The Wynnum Manly captain during the most successful time in Seagulls history, Luke Dalziel-Don, said the former North Queensland Cowboys coach can do the same with another struggling powerhouse in the Brisbane Broncos.

“When he came to us, we were the competition’s serial underperformers really,” Dalziel-Don said.

“Then we made the finals in 2010 and then, despite a slight hitch at the start of the 2011 season, went on to win it and did it again the next year.

“It was an incredible turnaround and it’s sort of like the Broncos are in the same position now.”

Green, who took the Cowboys to their maiden NRL premiership in 2015 as well as a grand final in 2017 and several Nines titles, is believed to be among the two favourites, with Kevin Walters, to take over as Broncos after Anthony Seibold’s departure this week.

And Dalziel-Don said the former Queensland State of Origin player wouldn’t be daunted at all by the challenge of turning around the NRL’s richest club.

“At the Seagulls, he wasn’t afraid to make tough decisions, he got rid of a few players who weren’t needed at the time and we then had a good mix of experience and leadership to go with some young talent,” he said.

“The Broncos don’t have that leadership right now and he’ll find the right people to do it.

“Then on top of that, he’s just very clear at giving players direction and letting them know what their job is, that direction can go a long way and it’s another thing the Broncos don’t really have.

“He also puts confidence in his players. Losing can become a habit, like it has with the Broncos, in the past they would have beaten St George last week just because that’s what the Broncos do.

“But not now, they’ve developed a losing habit. He can change that.

“He’s won an NRL premiership with the Cowboys and is one of the best coaches in the league so he knows what he’s doing.”

Dalziel-Don said Green was a leader who could make players buy into what he was trying to do.

“He’s not everyone’s cuppa tea, he can be an angry little man sometimes, but if players buy into what he’s doing, they’ll be successful and it’ll be the most fun football they’ve ever played,” he said.
