With the Intrust Super Cup season set to kick off this weekend, we’ve pulled together a squad of the best ever Wynnum Manly Seagulls. See who joins rugby league Immortal Wally Lewis in our team loaded with legends.

The Seagulls rose to dominance in the 1980s, featuring one of the best teams in rugby league history with the likes of Lewis, Gene Miles and many more helping the club win three premierships during the decade.

Many Seagulls players have also gone on to represent Queensland and Australia since that time before Wynnum Manly recreated the success of the famous 1980s teams with back-to-back premierships in 2011 and 2012.

BACKS

Fullback - Colin Scott: A talented and damaging fullback, who could also play on the wing. Scott, an indigenous player, was part of the Seagulls’ three premierships in 1982, 84 and 86 in what was arguably one of the greatest rugby league teams ever. Played 33 games for Queensland and one Test for Australia and also made 14 appearances for the Brisbane Broncos in 1988.

Wing - Lionel Morgan: The first ever indigenous player to represent Australia in 1960 and in 2008 was named in the indigenous team of the century. A prolific points scorer, Morgan scored five tries and six goals in a single match against Ipswich in 1962. He also made 12 appearances for Queensland between 1960-63.

Centre - Gene Miles: Known as one of the best centres of all time and formed one of the great partnerships with Wynnum Manly and Queensland teammate Wally Lewis. Miles won three premierships with the Seagulls and played 23 State of Origin games and played in 14 Tests for the Kangaroos. Was a fast and powerful centre, similar to that of Mal Meninga and moved into the second row later in his career.

Centre - Chris McKenna: Another powerful runner who moved into the second row later in his career, McKenna’s career started off somewhat slowly before he moved to the Cronulla Sharks, where he starred in the national competition and earned a spot in seven State of Origin matches for Queensland and two Tests for Australia.

Wing - Brett French: A talented winger who played five State of Origin matches for Queensland and had a stellar career with Wynnum Manly before playing for the North Sydney Bears and Gold Coast Seagulls. French’s most famous moment in his career with the Seagulls is scoring the game-winning try in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership grand final win over Souths.

Five-eighth - Wally Lewis: Arguably the greatest player to ever play the game. His ability to read the game and make plays is unmatched in the history of rugby league and it was that skill that also helped win two premierships during his time with the Seagulls, where he also was in the role of player/coach.

Halfback - Paul Green: A tough and hardworking playmaker who showed he was a star on the rise when he won the Rothman’s Medal in 1993 with Easts after starting his career with Wynnum Manly. Went on to have an impressive career with the Cronulla Sharks, North Queensland Cowboys as well as Queensland and Australia. Later coached Wynnum Manly to back-to-back premierships and the Cowboys to their first ever title.

FORWARDS

Front Row - Rod Morris: One of the dominant forward in the 1970s and the start of the 1980s, Morris starred for Easts, Balmain in the New South Wales competition and Wynnum Manly. Represented Queensland 12 times and Australia 16 times during his impressive career.

Hooker - John Dowling: A standout with Easts and Wynnum Manly in Brisbane before a six-year stint with the St George Dragons and represented Queensland three times in 1982.

Front Row - Greg Dowling: One of the top forwards in the 1980s, who had a great State of Origin career, playing 11 games for the Maroons as well as 12 Tests for Australia. A key part of the Seagulls’ premierships in 1982 and 1984.

Second Row - Bob Lindner: An incredibly talented second-rower who went on to have one of the best State of Origin and Test careers, playing 25 games for Queensland and scoring seven tries and also 22 appearances for Australia and scoring six tries along the way.

Second Row - Dane Carlaw: The first of his kind, a big bustling forward who had the speed of a back, which allowed him to have a long career with the Brisbane Broncos as well as in the State of Origin and for Australia. At the end of his career, went to the Seagulls and won back-to-back premierships in 2011 and 2012.

Lock - Ian French: A winner of the Rothman’s Medal in 1985, French helped Wynnum Manly win their first premiership in 1982 before playing in England and then for the North Sydney Bears. Also made six appearances for Queensland.

RESERVES

Jake Granville: One of the all time fan favourites at the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, stamped his name on the scene in 2011 where he helped the Seagulls win the premiership while playing fullback in defence and hooker in attack. An incredible playmaker from dummy half and a strong defender and went on to have one of his best games in the 2015 NRL grand final.

John Te Reo: Another fan favourite at Kougari Oval, who was a leader in the club’s back-to-back premierships in 2011 and 2012. A true utility who could step in and make an impact anywhere. Is best known for his competitiveness and ruthlessness on the field.

Luke Dalziel-Don: One of the club’s greatest ever players and captains. A no nonsense forward who got the job done almost every game and led the Seagulls to the 2011 and 2012 titles. Was destined for a career in the NRL before injury hindered his progress and forced an early retirement.

Mitchell Dodds: A tough prop who was known for his tackling technique, would leave runners on the ground for minutes after his bone crunching tackles. Is a junior for the club and went on to win two titles and have a good career with the Brisbane Broncos.

COACH

Graham Murray.

Graham Murray: The late, great Muzz! Was known as one of the best rugby league coaches in the country, having coached at different clubs in Australia and England as well as being CEO at the Seagulls before stepping into a coaching role prior to his unfortunate passing in 2013.
