Sam Kerr is celebrating the massive news of finally going public with her engagement — but a comment has emerged that appears to show where her heart really lies.

The Matildas star on Tuesday shared photos of the big moment she got down on one knee and popped the question to partner Kristie Mewis.

It turns out the Matildas captain and her American fiance have been engaged a lot longer than we all originally thought having finally confirmed their engagement earlier this month, almost two months after they set the internet ablaze with speculation.

Tongues had been wagging since an Instagram post of Mewis wearing what looked very much like an engagement ring emerged in mid-September.

But the pair kept it quiet, playing a game with fans as they refused to confirm the news until Mewis broke the couple’s silence on November 9 in an exclusive interview with People Magazine.

Photos of the couple looking all loved-up have warmed hearts throughout the year, which is why a comment from Kerr published on Tuesday night is so baffling.

The 30-year-old has been announced the winner of Marie Claire’s “Icon of the Year” during the magazine’s Women of the Year awards in Sydney.

The Chelsea striker told the publication it was her on-field life that meant the most to her this year.

Despite being injured for most of the tournament, Kerr was the central figure as the Matildas captured the hearts and minds of the country on their way to the semi-finals of the World Cup on home soil.

It’s understandable, but still surprising, why it was the first thing that popped into her head when asked about her highlight for 2023.

“Playing to packed stadiums around the country, in front of family and friends, while having the whole country support and get behind us was the highlight of 2023 for me,” she said.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics now in her sights, she said on her World Cup heroics, “It was a surreal time and something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

She also said: “We obviously went into the World Cup not wanting to come fourth – we would have loved to have gone further.

“But what we created off the pitch was even bigger. We’ve just had a chance to come back to Australia and play the Olympic qualifiers in Perth, and to see sell-out crowds in my hometown was epic.”

In the original interview earlier this month, Mewis confirmed the engagement for the first time and revealed how supporting Kerr had been after the US were knocked out in the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s World Cup.

“My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said.

But the latest post on Tuesday night has also revealed just when they were engaged — September 1st, 2023.

That was just under two weeks after the Matildas’ World Cup campaign ended in the 2-0 third-place playoff loss to Sweden.

It’s impressive for Kerr, who is one of the biggest women’s footballers in the world, and her bride, a high-profile player in her own right, to be to keep everything quiet for nearly three weeks.

Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.

“We’re not private people,” Kerr told Gaffer.

“I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”

Kerr added that it was important to her to be with someone who understood the demands of football, particularly when they play on the opposite sides of the world.

Mewis added: “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me.

“I love to share my relationship on social media.”

The pair won over fans at the World Cup, sharing a photo dump of their time together, as well as being snapped celebrating with a kiss.
