The first of six light towers at Bagot Oval were erected today, with the park to be fully adorned by the light poles by the end of next week.

Bagot Oval, home of the Mindil Aces is the first of three ovals to have the towers installed over the next six weeks before they are fully operational by the end of September.

Darwin council project officer Tony Yiannakos said coronavirus kept the metal poles in China, the poles will still be completed but the end was now in sight.

“It turned out to be between 10 and 12 weeks, a significant delay to the project,” he said.

“It’s been a long process to get to this point … but now we are looking at the finishing line.”

Mindil Aces Football Club President David McWilliam said the club was looking forward to seeing soccer played under lights at Bagot Park.

“It’s very exciting, it’s been a long time in the making,” he said.

“I think for probably the first time we were making moves to arrange lights would have been 15 years ago, so we’re pleased at last they’re about to go up.”
