ELLAS Titans unveiled their 2021 Indigenous jersey last week in anticipation for the upcoming Darwin Basketball Indigenous round and to celebrate NAIDOC week.

Ellas Titans opted to wear their Indigenous jersey during the NAIDOC week game against Eagles, which the side won 91-68.

Artist Jennifer ‘Lulu’ Coombes is well known for creating art in the Tiwi traditional style and most recently designed Hawthorn’s Indigenous guernsey for the 2018 AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

“I am proud of the presentation of the jumpers and acknowledging not just me but also paying respect to the Tiwi people,” Coombes said.

“NAIDOC is the one day where we as a nation acknowledge all first nations people. But for me I celebrate every day how proud I am to be Aboriginal through my artworks.

“Each of my works has a special meaning or story behind them which has been passed down to me by my late grandfather, my mothers and also my uncles.

“I love this year’s theme ‘Heal Country’ as I have always been taught to respect and look after country and country will look after us.”

The NAIDOC round was postponed due to Covid restrictions earlier in the month while there will be an Indigenous round for all grades from August 9-14.

The Titans win over Eagles has positioned the side in an almost secure second place in the 2021 Darwin Basketball League.

Ben Streeter top scored with 20 points in the all-around team effort while regular scorers Deola D’Brown (17 points) and Raymond Jarrett (13 points) also put in strong contributions.

The side will next face off against Uni Rebels, a match up that the Titans will be looking to in order to further secure their chances of a final berth.

Ansett and Lightning also strengthened their positions in the top four last week with important wins over Uni Rebels and Palmerston Power respectively.
