NEW Palmerston recruit and swingman Pat Golong believes being at the Power will present him with the best opportunity to push for the coveted MVP gong in the 2021 Darwin Basketball Championship. Golong is a prized pick-up for the Power, after averaging just over 13 points per game for Eagles in their DBA Championship title win last year.

“I’m super excited about this opportunity. Palmerston has a great family environment,” Golong told the NT News. “I scouted them a lot last year and I was keen to go across. They’re a great group of guys.
“I’ll be able to play up and down the court with my size and athleticism.
“I want to bring some leadership and fight for the competition MVP title, and make the first-team defensive side.
“I’m looking forward to playing with someone like Jesse Bell.”
Golong also believes he can take his game to a new level under Palmerston coach Lance Godwin.
“Lance has such an attention to detail. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Golong said.
“He records and watches everything.
“He’s so meticulous.”
Golong has already made a strong impression at the Power, coming up with two 20-plus games against Uni Rebels and Ellas Titans so far from seven games in the Division 1 Challenge season.
“I’ve started pretty well. My numbers have been a bit up and down just because we’ve had some players in and out of the team, but I feel like I’m just starting to pick things up,” Golong said.
“Me and the older guys are helping out and mentoring the junior guys in the Div 1 team. It’s a new role for me, but I’m enjoying it and it’s a privilege.”
Golong – a former Waverley Falcons player in the Big V – loved his time at Eagles, but says he will embrace the added responsibility at the Power.
“We had two amazing imports – Joe Jackson and Chris Elder last year,” Golong said.
“But I feel like this was the right thing to do. I’m looking forward to stepping up and taking on more of an attacking and defensive workload.”
The 2021 Championship season starts on April 8.
