IF James Seymour excelling with 60 on his Sheffield Shield debut got Waratah fans excited, there could be another one not too far away.

That man could be their inspirational captain, Isaac Conway.

Conway had the double distinction of being voted in to the SACA Premier League Cricket Men’s Team of the Year, as well as picking up the CW Walker Memorial Trophy for the competition’s best wicketkeeper.

Waratah captain Isaac Conway returns to the Top End intent on seeing his Darwin club gain some success in 2020

Experience versus youth will decide the champion side of the 2020 district cricket season

Waratah’s James Seymour ‘wasn’t good enough’ according to coach Udara Weerasinghe, before the star allrounder proved him wrong during the Red Caps’ 2020 Darwin Premier Grade title-winning season

Conway’s highest score was an unbeaten 104 for Port Adelaide against Southern District, while making another five half-centuries over the 2020-21 season.

“Isaac has shown his dedication and how much he wants to be better,” Waratah player-coach Udara Weerasinghe told the NT News.

“He deserves this recognition because he’s shown how well he can adapt to different conditions.

“It’s great he got that recognition for being the competition’s best wicketkeeper.

“After (South Australia and Australian one-day wicketkeeper) Alex Carey they’re now talking about Isaac being the next in line (to play for the Redbacks).”

Conway’s work ethic and desire to continue learning is why his wicketkeeping craft is now so highly regarded.

The proof was him coming up with an impressive five stumpings and 15 catches behind the woodwork during the 2020-21 SACA Premier League season.

“He just works hard. Keeping to three or four spinners, including me, my brother Madura and Ishara Gange – he’s learnt a lot from that,” Weerasinghe said.

“And he’s always keen to learn more about different spinners and stand up to the stumps.

“What Isaac has shown in South Australia is quite amazing.

“His dedication and commitment has been very impressive and it’s showing with the way he’s playing down there.”

Conway is back in Darwin and ready for Waratah’s Premier Grade Round 1 clash away to Palmerston this Saturday.
