GUN wicketkeeper Isaac Conway has come back to the Territory to captain Darwin Premier Grade club Waratah for the 2020 season.

His return follows a summer season with the Camberwell Magpies at Melbourne first-grade level where he managed three fifties with the bat.

He was also regarded as one of the best glovemen in the competition by many pundits, taking 22 catches from behind the stumps.

“I’m pretty excited to be returning to Waratah, having played for them for the past three seasons and it’s an honour to be named captain,” Conway told the NT News.

“It’s particularly exciting to return as there was a period of time last year where it looked like the club wouldn’t be fielding a senior side this year. I would have liked to have scored a few more runs in the summer. I feel I left a few runs out there and would have liked to have taken more from some good starts.

“I do hope to be able to play for Victoria at first-class level – that’s the goal but is quite tough to get into. That’s why we’ve come up here to help develop our game.”

Conway is looking forward to joining his Red Caps squad mates as soon as possible, but is currently seeing out his two-week quarantine after coming up from Melbourne.

Star players such as bowler Tristan Glover, allrounder James Seymour and player-coach Udara Weerasinghe – who made a move from Nightcliff – will also be features of the 2020 Waratah side.

Opening bat Riley Vernon from Gisborne Cricket Club in Victoria will make his first start for Tahs this season and Conway expects him to be a good inclusion to the side.

“As a team we would like to be playing in a final and hope to go deep as we have a strong team,” Conway said.

“I hope to contribute as much as I can with the bat, picking up some good scores and also behind the stumps with the gloves to make the catches.”
