Children of Hawthorn premiership greats recreate iconic grand final photos

As Hawthorn attempts to capture the real meaning of its club mantra, the AFL powerhouse turned to the next generation to celebrate its golden premiership era. SEE THE PHOTOS

Leni Burgoyne nailed it.

Her task was to recreate a famous photo of her father Shaun in full flight with his arms outstretched celebrating a goal.

The four-time premiership player gave his daughter full marks for the recreation, although he added she and his other three children have had plenty of practice over the years.

“They’ve seen it on TV that many times so I think that really helped,” Burgoyne laughed.

A group of Hawthorn greats and their children reunited to re-create a series of moments from the club’s premiership three-peat era from 2013 to 2015.

The photographic series is the latest iteration of the club’s Always story, which sets to capture the meaning behind ‘Always Hawthorn’.

The Burgoynes, alongside the Hodges, Mitchells, Lakes, Rougheads, Lewis’, Hales and Puopolos, reunited at Waverley Park to bring Always to life.

“It was awesome to have all the boys there that played in the three-peat and their kids,” Burgoyne said.

“They got all dressed up in guernseys and re-acted the shots and they loved it.

“As a father, all the guys really enjoyed sharing those moments with their kids.

“You’ve got to get it done quick with kids and it was a pretty cold day, but they were all great.”

Burgoyne said it was the perfect opportunity to reunite with his teammates he shared the ultimate prize with on three separate occasions.

“It was great catching up with the guys and not much changes with all the stories that obviously create a lot of laughter and smiles and happy memories,” he said.

Burgoyne said it was a “relief” to be entering 2020 as a Hawthorn player after knocking back a multi-year deal by Gold Coast two months ago.

“It’s always stressful contemplating your future,” he said.

“That’s something we went through and I’m happy to have reached my decision so I can concentrate on my footy.

“It starts again next week, which has come around pretty quick, and time stands still for no one.

“That was my decision and we move on to the next thing, but it’s a relief to have that decision made and to be starting the pre-season.”
