Aussie swimming stars arrive in Birmingham for Commonwealth Games

The NT’s best swimming talent was on show this week at the 2023 Country Swimming Championships in Darwin, that saw swimmers from across the country come and test their mettle at the long course event.

Hosting the event in conjunction with Swimming NT and the Parap Swimming Pool, Darwin Swimming Club has had great success at home.

Claiming gold medals in the 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m freestyle, 200m medley relay, and silver in the mixed 200m freestyle relay, DSC’s own James Smith was in fine form over the eight sessions.

“It’s been a pretty good meet,” Smith said.

“Exhausting though, otherwise it’s been really good, some great competition.

“I’ve got a couple of golds (medals), and almost all of my races have been PBs’s.

“I think everyone (DSC swimmers) has done pretty well.”

The 17-year-old was stoked about the champs being in Darwin and having the opportunity to race in his home town.

“It’s nice to get to stay here (Darwin),” Smith said.

“It’s always great to race some quality swimmers at a big competition.”

Local rising stars, interstate challengers and a world record holder make up the more than 250 swimmers set to make a splash in the Country Swimming Championships in Darwin.

Olympic gold medallist Chelsea Hodges will headline as not just the event ambassador, but also in the pool showing off her world class speed in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

And watching her in action will inspire the 280 other competitors, 103 from the NT, take their own craft to the next level.

Swimming NT chief executive Warren Dopson said the tournament was coming together really well ahead of this weekend’s event at the Parap Swimming Pool.

“This is a massive event for Swimming NT and all the kids who are part of swimming up here as it provides access to high level competition,” he said.

“We’re running it in a format similar to the Australian Championships to give them experience competing in heats in the morning and finals at night.

“Not only is this a competitive swim meet but it’s part of their development cycle just to get them used to competing at higher level competitions and having people from interstate bolsters that.

“It’s a multifaceted opportunity not only for kids in the NT, but also all the regional swimmers that are coming up because this is a regional event.”

Among the local swimmers to watch is Macey Sheridan who won six gold medals at this year’s Age Championships, and is targeting some records to add to her growing haul.

Sienna Walo and Tamsyn Walo will also be swimmers to keep an eye on having impressed at the Short Course Championships in Sydney.

But Hodges will be the one to inspire as she dives in for her two events.

Territorian Macey Sheridan has taken shocked the country when she claimed six gold medals in the Australian Age Group Swimming Championships.
Territorian Macey Sheridan has taken shocked the country when she claimed six gold medals in the Australian Age Group Swimming Championships.

“Macey did incredibly well in the Australian Age Championships on the Gold Coast in April so we expect her to have a fantastic meet once again,” Dopson said.

“Olympian and event ambassador Chelsea Hodges is coming up and racing the 50m and 100m breaststroke

“It’s exciting for girls competing against her and fantastic of her to give the opportunity to see an Olympian in action, we’ve already got 100 people signed up for her clinic on Friday.”
