REPLAY: NT AFL Premier League St. Marys vs Wanderers

DESPITE trailing for the majority of the game Wanderers – on the back of six goals from star forward Brett Eddy – never gave up, chipping away to overcome and beat St Mary’s 14.11 (96) to 10.9 (69) at TIO Stadium.

Saints took control in the first quarter though were unable to capitalise on early opportunities taking only four goals from 10 scoring chances.

They found their goal scoring momentum soon after with Thomas Long bagging the first while Dustin Walters was the benefactor two 50m penalties against Wanderers.

Saint’s stalwart Raphael Clarke did a lot of work to retain possession for his side while Nate Parades was busy on the ball.

The Muk Muks found some intensity in the second quarter winning more stoppages and eventually received reward for their hard efforts with Brett Eddy kicking three goals in a row.

That intensity coming from increasing dominance in their defensive zone and centre field to catch Saints by surprise with scores from speedster Simon Bates and Brydan Hodgson.

The Green Machine kept themselves alive but the Wanderers kept coming narrowing the point difference to just a goal heading into the final quarter.

And within a minute of the last period the boots of Eddy and Shaun Mannagh had reversed that margin to put their side ahead.

Eddy who scored six goals in total credited his side’s ability to chip away at their opponent’s total after a slow beginning.

“Pretty relieving to get the win. They came out of the blocks really hard with a really good first quarter,” Eddy told the Sunday Territorian.

“We just had to chip away. We knew we were fit and had a good system in place so we just had to keep going and going because you’ve got to play four quarters to win.

“On scoring I’m just the beneficiary of these guys hard work but a forward’s job is to kick straight and it’s still a work in progress.”

A Harry Williams double saw Saints crawl back into the contest but repeated mistakes and ill-discipline continued to let the side down as time ticked by.

It was a Brayden Culhane grubber goal following a period of scrappy defence from St Mary’s that sewed up the game for the Muk Muks.
