YOUNG Ansett star Freddy Webb is on the road to recovery 16 weeks after undergoing hip surgery, which saw him out of play since the third round of the 2019-20 Darwin Basketball Association Challenge season.

Webb suffered from a labral tear in both hips, which meant the cartilage was torn and if untreated could have led to hip arthritis later in life.

But with surgery behind him, the gun playmaker is working hard on getting back to the prolific form he enjoyed pre-surgery.

That form included a 30-point game (seven three-pointers) in his team’s big 125-59 win over Uni Rebels on November 2.

“It all went really well, it’s slow progress but I can run and jump to an extent now, but bone healing does take a while,” Webb told the Sunday Territorian.

“I’m probably four to six weeks off playing and then there’s another four to six weeks until I’m back to the level that I was before surgery.

“But I am working hard and looking forward to the next season up here.

“Ansett were looking really good at the end of last season and are in a good place.”

With the ongoing COVID-19 crisis disrupting sport all around Australia and the world, the next DBA season’s start date is currently in limbo, with plans in place to lengthen the season until December should it start later than expected.

Webb originally planned to return to the US to continue his exercise science degree at the Central Maine Community College.

But considering the current pandemic and his own rehabilitation, Webb has decided to see out his degree in Darwin.

“I’ve been in constant contact with Ansett and coach Steve Toohey and so I want a strong season up here,” Webb said.

“Then I want to try my hand in a state competition down south, don’t know when yet but that’s a goal of mine. At the moment though I just want to focus on my rehab.”

He also runs his own personal training business, which he has managed to adapt to an online workshop for Basketball NT’s high-performance athletes.

“It’s going pretty well. I’m able to run training sessions for our high-performance athletes over Zoom, such as Abby Cubillo,” Webb said. “It has its challenges as we have no access to gyms or equipment, but I am really enjoying it. I’m limited to two impact sessions a week so I don’t need to be training all the time.”
