ANSETT star guard Freddy Webb says he’s excited at the prospect of playing in Queensland’s NBL1 North competition next year.

Interest in the 21-year-old playmaker from the Sunshine State has been high.

So much so that the Basketball Queensland Indigenous Pathways Program manager, Joel Khalu, flew to Darwin as part of a Hoops for Health clinic before watching Webb train, and then the playmaker picked his brains about playing in the NBL1 North competition.

Khalu is also head coach of the Mackay Meteors.

“Joel flew here last weekend and I worked out with him in person and in a group,” Webb told the NT News.

“The workout went well. I didn’t try and be someone I wasn’t, rather, I showed him who I am and the successful habits I carry that have led me to be in this position.

“We had a conversation after the workout in which we discussed how he best believes my game would translate in the NBL1 North competition.

“Mackay is a traditionally strong program. Although not as a big as Brisbane and Cairns, it attracts great crowds of about 1200 people in the newly-renovated facility.”

Khalu is already a popular name in Territory basketball.

“Joel is the Basketball Queensland Indigenous Pathways Program manager, and he’s worked with Indigenous players around the country,” Webb said.

“The Darwin Basketball CEO Kerri Savidge has a good working relationship with him, so we’re building a good connection with Mackay Basketball, which is an awesome pathway for our elite young players.”

Webb also has fielded interest from a handful of Adelaide clubs, and will soon fly south to look at and train in their facilities.

Those clubs include Woodville, West Adelaide, Southern and Forestville.

“There’s a lot of interest from Adelaide clubs and I want to give them all an opportunity to have a look at me and make a decision,” Webb said.

Webb told the NT News on Monday that playing at NBL1 level next year would be a vital building block in his long-term goal of playing in the NBL.

“At the start of this season I set myself some goals, and playing in the NBL was one of them,” he said.
