ANSETT showed plenty of defensive intensity in their handy 95-73 Darwin Basketball League Round 4 win over a strong Lightning outfit, while Tracy Village announced themselves after toppling Ellas Titans.

The previously undefeated Lightning looked to show intensity early scoring quickly through Jake Geer (16 points).

But Ansett soon found their footing and an important three pointer from Kane Toohey (10 points) gave the side their lead.

Star Lightning junior Luca Tutty says breathing exercises, staying calm are keys to success after his great start in Darwin Basketball

As the game went on Ansett found increased opportunities using their physicality pushing the ball down the court to the benefit of Joshua Turner (20 points) and Henry Bui (15 points).

Lachlan Shipway put in a big performance on the board picking up rebounds both in offence and defence while Cam Duncan was put in important contributions defensively.

For Lightning Luca Tutty (28 points, six three pointers) continued his fine start to the season contributing on the scoreboard alongside Brodie Hertel (13 points).

However, with Ansett being the more consistent scorers and the game ending injury of bench player Cameron Bailey they found themselves with too much work to do.

“It was a good win, we just need to push a bit harder at the start of games,” Turner told the NT News.

“We were a bit slow at the start but picked up better around the third quarter with our defence being strong but there is still room for improvement.

“Our defensive intensity and our push on the fast break is really what got us over the line. But we still need to work on our offensive execution a bit.”

Tracy Village Jets reminded the rest of the league that they’re still in business despite missing some of their 2020 stars after beating a previously undefeated Ellas Titans side.

Captain Dante Ah Sam was particularly pleased with the heart his side showed fighting to the very end even when Ellas Titans looked to make a late surge.

Though the courage showed by a talent deep Jets with Ambrose MacLean one of the standouts will give the young side plenty of confidence going forward.

“It was good considering they’re one of the toughest teams in the league and to stay with it for four quarters showed our heart,” Ah Sam said.

“It just came down to communication on the court. We went nine or 10 deep on the bench and what made us different out there was our quick rotations and getting guys out when we needed to.

“We just have to build on that win now getting to training, working on our sets and hopefully it works out for us in the end.”
