Dallas Cowboys quarterback overwhelmed after securing $164 million guarantee

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott gave his big brother a bear hug after securing a life-changing contract despite a devastating injury.

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have a deal — and it’s massive.

The NFL team on Tuesday reached an agreement with its star quarterback on a four-year, $209 million (AUD) contract extension that includes $164 million guaranteed and a no-trade clause, according to multiple reports.

The deal can reach as high as $215 million with incentives.

The Cowboys have expressed confidence Prescott will be able to return to the field this season after he suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 of last season against the New York Giants.

Prescott was overwhelmed after getting the phone call confirming the deal, holding his older brother, Tad, in a bear hug.

Dallas is expected to franchise tag Prescott as a procedural matter and a formal announcement is scheduled for later this week.

The first three years of Prescott’s deal will average $55 million and his signing bonus of $86 million will be the largest in NFL history, according to ESPN. The deal also comes with a no-tag clause, according to NFL Network.

Dallas previously had the option to have the 27-year-old play this year on the franchise tag at around $49 million. Doing a multi-year contract will allow the Cowboys to spread out his salary cap hit.

Dallas reportedly wanted a five-year pact to aid in the salary cap help with the league taking a financial hit during the coronavirus pandemic. Prescott was asking for four years so he can be a free agent again when the NFL’s TV contracts are up for renegotiation.

The Cowboys and Prescott have been negotiating over the past three off-seasons but both sides had seem determined to get a deal done.

Prescott, the Cowboys’ fourth-round pick in the 2016 Draft, was off to a stellar start last season under new coach Mike McCarthy, averaging 371.2 yards per game and a 99.6 quarterback rating but Dallas’ porous defence left them at 2-3 through five games.

He threw for 1856 yards with nine touchdowns to four interceptions in those games.

Prescott won offensive rookie of the year honours in 2016 as the Cowboys reached the playoffs with 13 victories in the regular season.

In 2019, he threw for 4902 yards and 30 touchdowns, falling one-yard short of beating Tony Romo’s franchise single-season passing record.

But the Cowboys have missed the playoffs in three of the past four seasons, including last year in the NFC East. However, with Prescott’s re-signing, Dallas can now go about the business of improving the pieces around their franchise quarterback.
