Dak Prescott was carted off the field on a medicab as the crowd tried to raise his spirits after the NFL star suffered a gruesome injury that left him in tears.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback’s ankle twisted horribly after being caught underneath a tackle by cornerback Logan Ryan in today’s game against the New York Giants, and everyone knew immediately it was serious.

Prescott remained on the ground and waved for help as TV cameras captured his ankle bending in a way it simply shouldn’t.

Distraught players rushed over to check on Prescott, while others started praying for him. Even the Giants’ offensive co-ordinator Jason Garrett — the former head coach of the Cowboys — came onto the field to check on his ex-pupil.

Dallas quarterback Andy Dalton suited up straight away to replace Prescott as the fan favourite raised his fist and cried on his way to the sideline while receiving a standing ovation and wild applause.

Prescott was taken to a local hospital and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports he will undergo surgery later today.

Adding to the pain for Prescott is the fact he is without a contract for next year after failing to agree to terms with Dallas, leading him to play in 2020 under a one-year franchise tag.

The Cowboys wanted to re-sign Prescott on a multi-year deal but the 27-year-old — who was scooped up in the 2016 Draft — was holding out for more money and rejected the team’s latest offer, reported to be worth $242 million over five years.

The two-time Pro Bowler is reportedly guaranteed $AUD43 million in 2020 but beyond that his future is uncertain. His horror injury means the lucrative payday Prescott was searching for will likely be out of reach next time he sits down at the negotiating table — if he even returns to the NFL at all.

Football fans were shattered by Prescott’s devastating blow.

ESPN sportscaster Stephen A. Smith uploaded a video to social media saying: “I can’t imagine him recovering from that, that’s just as nasty as it gets.

“You see guys on their knees already praying for him.

“My heart goes out to him, I’m wishing him nothing but the best.

“That’s what I was talking about when I wanted him to get his money — that long-term deal that somehow could have been worked out.

“Time and time and time again he’s called upon to prove himself even though he had been proving himself years ago.

“He got his money for this season, but what about his future? This is exactly what I feared.”

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman tweeted: “Devastated for @dak — one of the truly great people in the NFL.”

Philadelphia Eagles star Darius Slay wrote: “Praying for homie!!”

Arizona’s Patrick Peterson added: “Sending prayers to my guy @dak!”

Former Cowboy and New Orleans Saint Dez Bryant called on Dallas “take care of Dak if he can’t play again”.

NFL analyst Tank Williams was another deeply sympathetic to Prescott’s plight.

“Dak’s face, as he was getting carted off, says it all,” Williams wrote. “It’s easy to focus on the contract but those tears represented the passion, time & sweat he put into this season, just to see it taken away in an instant.

“Don’t wish that feeling on anyone. Prayers up & get healthy soon!”
