SuperCoach AFL 2024: Big winners and losers from round 3
Players traded out of thousands of SuperCoach teams dominated and the backline cheapie crisis took another cruel twist. At least we had Max Gawn. See all this week’s hits and misses.
SuperCoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
It was a long wait until SuperCoach lockout ends after round 3 started way back on Easter Thursday.
And there were some huge SuperCoach scores, big surprises and shockers – and a delay due to lightning – across four days of footy,
How many were in your team?
WINNERS
MAX GAWN – 177 POINTS
Gawn was at his dominant best against Port Adelaide with a brilliant all-round game for a ruckman that included 20 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 50 hitouts, six marks, five tackles and a booming goal as he carried the Dees to a famous win. It’s games like this that make SuperCoach fun.
NICK VLASTUIN – 177 POINTS
A career-high 15 intercepts as the Tigers backman did his best Alex Rance impersonation to thwart the Swans. Now averaging 123 points a game for the season – what a POD for 2 per cent of SuperCoach teams.
ISAAC HEENEY – 148 POINTS
Cut and paste him in here every week. Another massive game with 27 disposals, eight marks and two goals. John Longmire can’t move him out of the midfield now.
HARRY MCKAY– 137 POINTS
You won’t hear the end of it if someone in your league traded in McKay this week – and fair enough. One of the great trade wins as Harry dominated up forward and in the ruck. So much for his wayward goalkicking – he has 11.2 for the year. And Fremantle’s injury-depleted backline next week.
NIC MARTIN – 136 POINTS
Had stats boffins scrambling for the record books with 44 disposals against the Saints. Could have scored a lot more if not for a few mistakes but still a great reward for coaches who kept the faith.
HAYDEN YOUNG – 132 POINTS
Speaking of repaying faith, the most traded out player in SuperCoach had a point to prove and showed why he was such a popular selection at the start of the season. Could we get him back?
ZACH MERRETT – 131 POINTS
How is one of the best and most consistent SuperCoach scorers of recent years in so few teams? The Bombers skipper hasn’t scored below 127 for the year and should be in a lot more than 8 per cent of teams.
NICK DAICOS – 112 POINTS
This won’t be anywhere near Nick’s biggest SuperCoach score of the year and it took a huge final quarter to get there, but 130,000 coaches breathed a big sigh of relief after last week’s shocker.
BEN MILLER – 103 POINTS
We love a unique selection and Miller is about as unique as they come, featuring in just 400 teams – statistically 0 per cent. With injuries ravaging Richmond’s backline the tall utility has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.
MATT ROBERTS – 98 POINTS
Next week when we go back to best 22 scoring find a way to get the redheaded Swans rookie on the field. After scores of 94 and 98 the past two weeks he’s far too good to be sitting on your midfield bench. And he’s going to make us a mountain of cash.
OLIVER DEMPSEY – 86 POINTS
Well played if you were one of the just over 9000 coaches who traded in the Cats rookie before his bubble game. Wild weather at the MCG didn’t stop him winning the footy all over the field, finishing with 22 disposals, six marks, seven tackles and 86 SuperCoach points – and a huge price jump after lockout.
BUKU KHAMIS – 82 POINTS
Set for a big price jump after his best score of the season that featured 19 disposals (at 90 per cent efficiency) and nine marks against the Eagles. Could you play him on field instead of Harley Reid or Nat Fyfe next round?
LOSERS
TOM LIBERATORE – 98 POINTS
The latest Bulldog to be ‘Bevoed’. Libba was on track for a big score when coach Luke Beveridge tapped him on the shoulder and subbed him off with a quarter to play.
JACK SINCLAIR – 89 POINTS
The All-Australian Saint had some nice moments on Saturday but after scores of 78 and 89 since returning from injury, his price is set to nosedive. Keep an eye out for a form turnaround and snap him up as a backline bargain.
JORDAN DAWSON – 68 POINTS
His usually laser-like left boot has deserted Dawson this year as he records a kicking efficiency of just 49 per cent for the season – down from 75 per cent last season. Will lose a heap of value this week and even more next round. Is it time to jump ship?
LUKE DAVIES-UNIACKE – 67 POINTS
The Kangaroos playmaker had just three kicks at halftime before staging a mini recovery to post a score that is still miles off what we know he is capable of. Another star whose price will be on the way down.
JAYDEN SHORT – 60 POINTS
The ultimate opening round tease. A huge score of 130 against Gold Coast sucked in plenty of coaches, but he hasn’t gone close to that since as Nick Vlastuin becomes the main distributor – and kick-in taker – for the Tigers.
JORDAN DE GOEY – 55 POINTS
What has happened to De Goey this season? It’s a question Craig McRae would love the answer to. Bizarrely, 55 is actually his second-best score in the opening four rounds. Now averaging 58 points a game, a drop of almost 40 from last season.
JACK BILLINGS – 42 POINTS
His 119 against the Bulldogs seems a lifetime ago. Was subbed out of the Demons’ win against Port Adelaide with just eight disposals to his name.
BLAKE HOWES – 26 POINTS AND TOBY PINK – 15 POINTS
Howes had zero points at halftime against the Power and Pink was in the negatives against Carlton ... at least they improved in the second half. Best 18 scoring this week allowed most coaches to discount their scores but next week it will be a different story. Fortunately, most of us will be in the same boat having to field at least one of these guys.
