Adelaide United midfielder Stefan Mauk ranked 28th in KFC SuperCoach after Round 3

Stefan Mauk is best known for his exploits on the soccer pitch, but the Adelaide United midfielder is making a name for himself as one of Australia’s top KFC SuperCoaches. Here’s where he’s ranked after three rounds and how he got there.

A-League star Stefan Mauk has used the competition’s COVID-19 shutdown to hone his KFC SuperCoach skills with great effect.

A combination of intense study and listening to podcasts including The Phantom’s Lair and SuperCoaches Box has paid off for the Adelaide United midfielder, who sits 28th overall after three rounds.

Mauk’s team Yeaaaaahtheboyssss dodged the carnage of Round 3 to score 2115 and jump from about 350th overall into the top-50.

His side is headlined by Lachie Neale, Nat Fyfe, Matthew Rowell, Jy Simpkin and Patrick Cripps, who feature in the top-15 point scorers to Round 3.

“I went pretty hard in the midfield,” Mauk said.

“But because of the COVID-19 and knowing there might have been shorter games, I tried to pick players that I thought were good athletes that would look after themselves.

“Obviously now that’s changed because they’re not playing two or three games in a week.

“But that’s what I went for and then went for a few mid-pricers in the forward line and down back.

“I just didn’t think there was many good premiums, so just stacked the midfield.”

The worry for those hoping to keep Mauk from launching into top spot is he has a $265,000 war chest to bolster his team in coming rounds.

He also survived without Dustin Martin (injury), Jack Viney, Trent Rivers and Devon Smith (postponed game) last round.

Mauk plays in a KFC SuperCoach league against teammate Michael Marrone and former Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar defender Stefan Nigro.

A diehard Richmond fan, Mauk said he enjoyed the tactical nous required to succeed in KFC SuperCoach.

“A few of us get into EPL fantasy, that’s definitely the biggest one that we all get into,” he said.

“But because of the time difference you can’t watch all the games and then you sometimes lose a little bit of interest.

“SuperCoach is a lot more (tactical), you have to be smart in who you pick and obviously save money for the cash cows and premiums.”

Mauk said he wouldn’t be making the same mistakes he did during his maiden KFC SuperCoach campaign last year as he tries to consolidate himself in the top 100.

“I really loved more of the tactics behind it and especially the thought process,” he said.

“I was all right last year but I got rid of all my trades too early.”
