Samsung is launching a new era of “human-like” AI-powered smartphones with its latest Galaxy S series, unveiled at Wednesday’s Galaxy Unpacked event.
The company introduced several AI-driven features across its new Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra models, including the ability to convert phone calls into text messages, automatically enhance photos with a single tap, and provide personalised, real-time traffic updates for faster route planning.
“The demand for mobile AI is quickly rising,” Eric Chou, Head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung Electronics Australia, said.
“The Galaxy S25 series and evolution of Galaxy AI will create effortless and intuitive experiences, via human-like AI agents which learn and analyse user patterns and context, to provide seamless and personalised actions or insights,” he said.
The Galaxy S25 series is “the first step” in the company’s “vision to change the way users interact with their phone – and their world” and labelled the Galaxy S25 as its “most intelligent smartphone yet.
Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra
Slimmer, lightweight and more powerful design
The latest facelift doesn’t stray far from recent leaks, with the Galaxy S25 range reverting back to rounded edges. It also boasts thinner bezels and a 15g lighter build.
All three iterations will additionally be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, which the company says is “the most powerful processor ever” for the Galaxy S series.
Camera
The Galaxy S25 Ultra gets the biggest camera upgrade with a 50MP Ultra-wide camera sensor for better ultra wide and macro photos, compared to the 12MP in the other two models and the previous Galaxy S24.
Across the board, the default camera setting will be upgraded to 10-bit HDR from 8-bit, allowing you get richer colour and better results in different types of lighting conditions without having to fiddle with the settings.
Photography lovers using Expert Raw can also get a more DSLR-like feel when it comes to controlling depth-of-field with the new Virtual Aperture, filming buffs can enjoy Galaxy Log for precise colour grading options.
GALAXY AI UPGRADES
But it’s how Samsung is making the most of the ‘new and improved’ Galaxy AI and One UI 7 that has the tech hub of the world excited.
Now Brief
Now Brief plays the ultimate personal assistant with real-time updates on what you really want, including up-to-date traffic information on where you need to travel to and from, based on what’s scheduled in your calendar.
The feature will proactively offer suggestions via the NowBar on the lock screen, and all personalised data will be secured by Knox Vault for a “powerful, protected AI experience”.
The list is customisable and will automatically adjust the information throughout the day so you’re not constantly refreshing or hunting things down.
Call Transcript
Users will be able to record phone calls and have a transcript generated into an SMS-style chat log, or bullet points for something more concise.
Natural language search
Search for photos and adjust your phone’s settings by saying or typing a simple command. The natural language search function helps the Galaxy S25 understand the context, so you won’t need to repeat the commands with different wording or worry about any stuttering impacting the results.
Circle to Search
The Circle to Search feature has levelled up and can now immediately recognise phone numbers, email addresses and URL’s on your screen to help you conduct a search faster.
Gemini Live
For those who like to have a chat with voice assistants like Siri, Gemini Live offers a more useful and less one-sided alternative. Hit the power buttton and interact with the AI tool as if it’s your best friend to get gift ideas, learn about something you’ve watched in a YouTube video or ask for tips on how to improve a particular photo you have taken.
Best Face and Audio Eraser
Has someone accidentally closed their eyes for a photo? The Best Face feature lets you correct the image with a few alternative stills.
When it comes to video, you can filter out voices, music, wind, nature and crowds with the Audio Eraser to get rid of annoying background noise or amplify your favourite singer’s vocals at a concert.
Personalised recommendations for health, pet care and more
Samsung wasn't kidding when it said it would offer a more customised experience. Users in the US and India can now sync their Samsung Health app with certain home appliances to adjust factors like temperature and air quality for a better sleep. There’s also a ‘vascular load indicator’ so you can keep track of your heart health and get suggestions on how to improve your health based on the data.
Even pet owners can also track their four-legged friend’s health and similarly receive tailored recommendations based on stored data.
Unsurprisingly, Samsung repeatedly emphasised the Galaxy S25 series will offer improved privacy protection to complement the perks of Galaxy AI and One UI 7, ensuring full control over data usage and better security controls.
GALAXY S25 EDGE AND XR HEADSET
The tech hub of the world is buzzing after Samsung recently confirmed whispers of a new slim phone and finally revealed a preview of the highly anticipated XR headset (or more famously codenamed, “Project Moohan”).
Galaxy S25 Edge
Jaws dropped at the SAP Centre in San Jose as the company ended its Galaxy Unpacked event with a teaser for the S25 Edge, only revealing a thin design with two rear cameras and a clip of its internal parts.
Rumours say it measures just 6.4mm thick, which would make it one of the company’s slimmest smartphone.
A demo model of the smartphone was also on display, albeit in a roped off section surrounded by several employees.
XR HEADSET (“Project Moohan”)
While the company remained similarly tight-lipped about the XR headset, it was the first time the public could finally get their eyes on the design.
It will run on Android XR, a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm which Samsung dubbed one of its “most ambitious endeavours yet”.
“(T)his headset will be your spatial canvas to explore the world through Google Maps, enjoy a sports match on YouTube or plan trips with the help of Gemini. All these experiences come with lightweight, ergonomically optimised hardware designed to ensure maximum comfort during use,” Samsung released in a statement last month.
